Sawtooth Oak

Sawtooth Oak is a vigorous, fast-growing tree known for its unique serrated leaves and broad, rounded canopy. Growing to about 45 feet tall and 35 feet wide, it provides excellent shade and produces abundant acorns. Its strong structure and adaptability make it ideal for parks, large yards, and natural areas. The foliage turns an attractive shade of yellow-brown in fall, adding seasonal interest to any landscape.

With attentive early care, Sawtooth Oak quickly becomes a long-lived, low-maintenance focal point in both rural and residential landscapes. This is all it needs:

• Watering: Water young Sawtooth Oaks deeply and regularly during the first 2-3 years to help establish a strong, drought-tolerant root system. Once mature, it becomes impressively resilient and typically requires supplemental watering only during long, intense droughts; avoid shallow watering.
• Pruning: Prune in late winter while the tree is dormant to remove dead, rubbing, or poorly angled branches. Young trees benefit greatly from early structural pruning to encourage strong branch spacing, but mature Sawtooth Oaks require minimal pruning.
• Fertilizing: Sawtooth Oak grows well in a wide range of soils and generally needs little to no fertilizer once established. If foliage becomes pale or growth slows, a light dose of slow-release fertilizer in early spring helps restore vigor - but avoid heavy nitrogen.
• Mulching: Apply a 2-3 inch layer of mulch around the base to retain moisture, stabilize soil temperature, and reduce competition from turfgrass. Expand the mulch ring outward as the tree matures to cover its spreading root area, keeping mulch several inches away from the trunk.
• Winter Care: Sawtooth Oak is reliably cold-hardy and rarely needs winter protection once established. Young trees may experience minor leaf browning during severe freezes, but they recover quickly in spring.

Common Issues and How to Take Care of Them

Sawtooth Oak is tough and dependable, though a few manageable issues can appear in stressful weather or poor soil conditions:

• Powdery Mildew: A white, powdery coating appears on leaves in shaded, humid areas. Improve air circulation and avoid wetting leaves to keep foliage healthy.
• Borers: Insects that tunnel throughout the wood, weakening it and disturbing the flow of nutrients.
• Leaf Scorch: During extremely hot or dry periods, leaves may brown along the edges. Deep watering and mulching will usually prevent this and promote recovery.
• Aphids: Small insects that feed on plant sap and produce honeydew that attracts sooty mold (black and grimy mold that weakens the tree).
• Scale: Bumpy, waxy insects attach to stems and feed on sap, causing yellowing leaves. Apply horticultural oil or insecticidal soap to control populations.
• Spider Mites: Tiny pests that can cause foliage discoloration during hot, dry weather. Rinse foliage with water or use insecticidal soap if infestations persist. Encouraging beneficial insects, like ladybugs, can also help keep mite populations under control.
• Tubakia (Fungal Leaf Spot): Brown spots may appear in late spring or summer, which occurs during really rainy periods. This is nothing to be concerned about. All Oaks, Maples and Elms will get Tubakia to varying degrees and it will not hurt your tree in any way. If you were to spray for Tubakia then it wouldn’t cause the spots to go away. They will remain on the leaf until the leaves fall off and once the new set of leaves are produced they will look normal again.
