Cherokee Sweet Gum
Liquidambar styraciflua 'Ward'Cherokee Sweet Gum delivers all the seasonal beauty of traditional sweet gum with a cleaner, more landscape-friendly habit. This deciduous tree boasts star-shaped, glossy green leaves that transform into a rich tapestry of burgundy, orange, red, and yellow in fall. It grows to a stately 45 feet tall and 30 feet wide, offering excellent shade with a strong, symmetrical structure. What sets Cherokee apart is its reduced fruiting - fewer of those spiky seed balls - making it a tidier choice for lawns and walkways. It’s perfect for anyone who wants that unforgettable fall show without the mess.
- Deciduous tree
- Moderate growth rate
- Vibrant fall color: red, orange, burgundy, and gold
- Glossy, star-shaped foliage
- Fewer seed pods than traditional sweet gum
Plant Cherokee Sweet Gum in full sun with moist, well-drained soil. Hardy in USDA zones 5 through 9, it’s a smart, stylish pick for North Texas landscapes that want fall color with less cleanup.
