The difference between Type 1 and Type 2 pecans lies entirely in their pollination timing, a critical factor for successful nut production. Pecan trees have separate male flowers (catkins) and female flowers (nutlets) on the same tree, but they rarely mature at the same time, a condition called dichogamy, which encourages cross-pollination.

- Type 2 Pecans are classified as protogynous. In these trees, the female flowers become receptive first (pro- = first; -gynous = female) before the male flowers on the same tree shed their pollen.
For an individual pecan tree to produce a high yield of well-filled nuts, it must be cross-pollinated by a complementary type. Therefore, for a successful harvest, a grower must plant at least one Type 1 tree and one Type 2 tree to ensure that when one is shedding pollen, the other's female flowers are ready to receive it.
