Obsession Nandina

Nandina domestica 'Seika'

Obsession Nandina is a standout variety known for its dramatic foliage. New growth emerges a vivid scarlet red, contrasting against mature deep green leaves. As temperatures cool, the plant shifts to red, delivering bold seasonal interest. This non-invasive, berry-free nandina maintains a naturally compact and upright form - reaching 3 feet tall and wide - making it ideal for mass plantings, foundation beds, or colorful accents in both traditional and contemporary Texas landscapes.

  • Evergreen shrub
  • Slow to moderate growth rate with compact and upright shape
  • Rich green mature foliage turns fiery red in fall/winter
  • Non-invasive and berry-free variety
  • Excellent for borders, foundation beds, and color contrast

Obsession Nandina thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers well-drained soil. It's heat-tolerant, drought-resistant once established, and adapts well to various soil types across Texas. Hardy in USDA zones 6 through 10, this shrub brings bold foliage color and reliable structure year-round.

Maintenance

Once established, Obsession Nandina is as easy to care for as it is to enjoy its beauty. Here’s all you need to do to help it thrive:

  • Watering: Water regularly during the first growing season to help roots establish. Once mature, it requires minimal supplemental water except during prolonged droughts. Always allow soil to dry slightly between waterings to prevent root rot.
  • Pruning: Very little pruning is required. Trim lightly in late winter or early spring to remove old or damaged stems and to encourage fresh, colorful growth. For a fuller look, selectively prune a few older canes back to the base every few years.
  • Fertilizing: Apply a light dose of balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring to maintain strong foliage color. Avoid excessive feeding, which can produce lanky, less colorful growth.
  • Mulching: Add a 2-3 inch layer of mulch around the root zone to help retain moisture and suppress weeds. Keep mulch a few inches away from the crown to prevent rot and pest issues. Refresh annually in spring for best results.
  • Winter care: Obsession Nandina is evergreen in mild regions and hardy through most winters. In extreme cold, a fresh layer of mulch helps insulate roots. Once spring returns, trim away any winter-burned leaves to make way for new vibrant growth.

Common Issues and How to Take Care of Them

Obsession Nandina is extremely resilient, but a few minor issues can occur if conditions become unfavorable:

  • Leaf Browning or Burn: Usually caused by extreme heat or cold exposure. Prune lightly to remove affected foliage, and new growth will quickly replace it.
  • Leaf Drop: Common after transplanting or severe drought. Maintain steady moisture and mulch to help stabilize recovery.
  • Chlorosis (Yellowing Leaves): May occur in highly alkaline soils. Apply a chelated iron supplement or soil acidifier if necessary.
  • Root Rot: The only major concern, caused by waterlogged soil. Ensure well-drained conditions and avoid overwatering.
  • Scale Insects: Small bumps on stems or leaves may appear rarely. Treat with horticultural oil during dormancy if infestations develop.
  • Leggy Growth: Typically due to age or lack of pruning. Cut back one-third of older stems to rejuvenate bushier, more colorful new growth.

It’s a long-lived shrub that can thrive 15-20 years or more. With periodic pruning and basic seasonal care, it maintains its color and vigor for decades.

It grows moderately fast, filling in within two to three years. Once mature, its compact habit stays naturally neat without constant trimming.

No - unlike older nandina varieties, Obsession is sterile and does not produce berries, making it noninvasive and wildlife-safe.

Yes, deer typically leave it alone due to its leathery leaves and mildly bitter taste, making it an excellent choice for rural and suburban landscapes.

Extremely well. It was bred specifically for Southern climates and maintains its vibrant foliage color through long, hot summers.

Yes, it’s hardy through most winters. Even if exposed foliage gets nipped by frost, the plant bounces back quickly in spring with new red-tinted growth.

Absolutely. Its compact, mounded shape and colorful foliage make it perfect for decorative pots, patios, and entryways. Use a well-draining potting mix and water regularly during hot months.

While it doesn’t flower heavily or produce berries, its dense growth provides cover for small birds and adds texture to wildlife-friendly gardens.

Yes - cut back a few of the oldest stems to the base in early spring. This encourages lush, colorful regrowth and keeps the shrub full and dense.

Perfectly. Its tidy growth, heat tolerance, and year-round color make it a favorite for city planters, office landscapes, and large-scale designs that demand both color and durability.
