Blush Pink Nandina

Nandina domestica 'AKA'

Blush Pink Nandina is an evergreen shrub that offers beautiful color shifts throughout the seasons. New foliage emerges a blush pink, matures to green in summer, and transforms to a rose-red in fall and winter. Unlike older nandina varieties, Blush Pink does not produce berries, making it a cleaner choice for many landscapes. With its compact, mounded habit reaching 2 feet tall and 1,5 feet wide, this shrub is ideal for borders, mass plantings, or adding soft color and texture to foundation beds.

  • Evergreen shrub
  • Moderate growth rate with compact, mounded form
  • New growth is blush pink, maturing to green, then red
  • Non-invasive and berry-free variety
  • Excellent for borders, mass plantings, and foundation beds

Blush Pink Nandina thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers well-drained soil. It's heat-tolerant, drought-resistant once established, and highly adaptable to a range of Texas conditions. Hardy in USDA zones 6 through 10, this plant delivers vibrant color and neat structure with virtually no fuss.

Blush Pink Nandina is a compact evergreen shrub admired for its delicate, bamboo-like foliage and easy-going nature! Here’s all this Texas favorite needs:

  • Watering: Water regularly during the first growing season to establish a strong, fibrous root system. Once established, Blush Pink Nandina is drought-tolerant but performs best with occasional deep watering during extended dry periods, especially in hot weather.
  • Pruning: Prune selectively in late winter or early spring to remove older canes and encourage fresh, colorful growth. Avoid shearing, as selective thinning preserves the plant’s natural, layered form.
  • Fertilizing: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring to support healthy growth and vibrant foliage color. In poor soils, a light second feeding in early summer helps maintain density and coloration without excessive growth.
  • Mulching: Apply a 2-3 inch layer of mulch around the base to retain moisture, regulate soil temperature, and suppress weeds. Extending the mulch ring helps protect shallow roots and improves overall plant health.
  • Winter Care: Blush Pink Nandina is cold-hardy and typically requires no winter protection once established. Cooler temperatures actually enhance its pink and red foliage tones, adding seasonal interest.

Blush Pink Nandina is low-maintenance and resilient, though a mix of environmental stressors and pests may occasionally appear:

  • Fading Color: Foliage may remain mostly green if plants receive too much shade. Providing brighter light encourages stronger pink and red coloration.
  • Leaf Scorch: Leaf tips may brown during extreme heat or drought. Consistent watering and mulching help maintain healthy foliage.
  • Spider Mites: Fine stippling or dull foliage may appear during hot, dry conditions. Rinsing foliage and maintaining adequate moisture helps control infestations.
  • Root Stress: Poor drainage may cause slowed growth or leaf drop. Improving soil structure and avoiding overwatering supports long-term health.
  • Cold Wind Burn: Leaves may show minor browning after exposure to harsh winter winds. Sheltered planting locations help prevent damage.

Blush Pink Nandina typically lives 30-50 years with proper care. Its woody structure supports long-term landscape performance. Mature plants often become fuller and more colorful with age.

It grows at a slow to moderate rate, adding approximately 6-10 inches per year. Full size and mature coloration are typically reached in 4-6 years. Growth remains compact and well-behaved as the plant matures.

Small white flowers can attract bees in late spring. While flowers are subtle, they still contribute to pollinator support. Foliage color remains the primary ornamental feature.

Blush Pink Nandina is considered highly deer-resistant. Its foliage is rarely browsed. This makes it a dependable choice in deer-prone landscapes.

It performs exceptionally well in containers due to its compact size. Containers highlight its foliage color and allow flexible placement. Consistent watering is important for container-grown plants.

Division is not recommended due to its woody growth habit. New plants are best established from nursery-grown stock. Attempting division may weaken mature plants.

Mass plantings create soft, uniform color with fine texture. Repetition enhances seasonal color transitions. Groupings work especially well in modern and minimalist designs.

Blush Pink Nandina pairs beautifully with boxwood, ornamental grasses, loropetalum, and flowering perennials. Dark foliage provides contrast to its pastel tones. These combinations create balanced, elegant plantings.

Once established, it requires very little care beyond occasional pruning and watering. Its evergreen structure reduces seasonal upkeep. Reliable performance makes it a favorite for low-maintenance designs.

It stands out for its gentle, blush-toned foliage and refined form. It delivers color without overpowering the landscape. Few shrubs offer such softness with such durability.
