Flirt Nandina

Nandina domestica 'Murasaki'

Flirt Nandina is a compact, mounded shrub with bold, burgundy-red new foliage that holds its color through summer. It grows just 1 foot tall and spreads up to 1.5 feet wide, creating a low profile perfect for edging, walkways, or container arrangements. The deep red new growth matures to a rich green, but often retains warm tones into cooler months. Flirt is a standout for small spaces where rich foliage contrast is needed without overwhelming taller companions.

  • Evergreen shrub
  • Burgundy-red new foliage
  • Dense and tidy mounding form
  • Year-round evergreen interest
  • Suitable for containers or edging

Flirt Nandina thrives in full sun to part shade and well-drained soil. This variety does not produce berries, making it a non-invasive choice for high-traffic areas or regulated planting zones. Hardy in USDA zones 6–10, it's a colorful and compact option for North Texas plantings that require low structure and bold foliage.

Flirt Nandina is a dwarf evergreen shrub valued for its dense, mounded habit and low-maintenance nature once established. Here’s all it needs to thrive:

  • Watering: Water regularly during the first growing season to establish a strong, fibrous root system. Once established, Flirt Nandina is drought-tolerant but performs best with occasional deep watering during extended dry periods or extreme heat.
  • Pruning: Prune selectively in late winter or early spring to remove older stems and encourage fresh, colorful growth. Avoid shearing, as selective thinning preserves the plant’s natural, layered appearance and compact form.
  • Fertilizing: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring to support dense growth and strong foliage color. In poor soils, a light second feeding in early summer helps maintain vigor without encouraging excessive softness.
  • Mulching: Apply a 2-3 inch layer of mulch around the base to conserve moisture, regulate soil temperature, and suppress weeds. Keeping the mulch ring slightly wider than the plant base helps protect shallow roots and improve overall health.
  • Winter Care: Flirt Nandina is cold-hardy and typically requires no winter protection once established. Cooler temperatures enhance its deep red foliage tones, adding strong winter color.

Flirt Nandina is very low-maintenance, though occasional environmental stress or pests may appear:

  • Color Fading: Foliage may shift toward green if plants are grown in excessive shade. Brighter light exposure encourages richer red and burgundy coloration.
  • Leaf Scorch: Leaf edges may brown during periods of extreme heat or drought stress. Consistent watering and proper mulching help prevent foliage damage.
  • Spider Mites: Fine stippling or dull foliage may develop during hot, dry weather. Periodic rinsing of foliage and maintaining moisture discourages infestations.
  • Root Stress: Poor drainage may cause slowed growth or leaf drop. Improving soil structure and avoiding overwatering supports long-term root health.
  • Cold Wind Burn: Exposed plants may show minor browning after harsh winter winds. Sheltered planting locations help preserve foliage quality.

Flirt Nandina typically lives 30-40 years with proper care. Its compact, woody structure allows it to maintain form over time. Mature plants often become denser and more vibrant with age.

Flirt Nandina grows at a slow to moderate rate, adding approximately 6-10 inches per year. A well-defined, mature form usually develops in 4-6 years. Growth remains tight and controlled throughout its lifespan.

Small white flowers may appear in spring and attract bees. While flowering is secondary to foliage color, it still contributes to pollinator support. Berry production is typically minimal on dwarf forms.

Flirt Nandina is considered highly deer-resistant. Its foliage is rarely browsed even in areas with heavy deer pressure. This makes it a reliable option for deer-prone landscapes.

Flirt Nandina performs exceptionally well in containers due to its compact size. Containers highlight its foliage color and allow flexible placement. Regular watering is important for container success.

Division is not recommended due to its woody growth habit. New plants are best established from nursery-grown stock. Attempting division may weaken mature plants.

Mass plantings create bold, uniform color and a clean, low profile. Repetition enhances visual impact in borders and foundation plantings. Groupings require minimal long-term maintenance.

Flirt Nandina pairs beautifully with boxwood, liriope, ornamental grasses, and flowering perennials. Dark green foliage enhances its red tones. These combinations create strong contrast and structure.

Once established, it requires very little care beyond watering and occasional thinning. Its evergreen structure reduces seasonal upkeep. Reliable color makes it a landscape favorite.

Flirt Nandina stands out for its compact size and intense red foliage. It delivers bold color in a small footprint. Few shrubs offer such impact with such easy care.
