Vintage Jade Distylium

Distylium ‘Vintage Jade’

Vintage Jade Distylium offers low, arching growth with year-round evergreen presence. This spreading shrub features deep green, lightly textured leaves and a graceful habit that softens hardscapes or slopes. Maturing at about 3 feet in height and spreading as wide as 4 feet, it forms a neat, layered mat that looks good year-round with minimal upkeep. Small reddish-maroon flowers appear in spring, adding understated seasonal detail. Its dense growth habit makes it a strong alternative to groundcovers in commercial or residential sites. It pairs well with ornamental grasses and flowering perennials.

  • Evergreen shrub
  • Moderate growth rate with low spreading habit
  • Minimal trimming required
  • Subtle blooms
  • Ideal for mass plantings and slopes

Vintage Jade grows well in full sun to partial shade and prefers moist, well-drained soil. Hardy in USDA zones 7-9, it performs reliably in North Texas with light seasonal cleanup.

Vintage Jade Distylium’s resilience, heat tolerance, and low-maintenance nature make it suitable for formal gardens, naturalistic landscapes, and container use. This is all you need to do to help it grow:

  • Watering: During the first growing season, water consistently to establish strong roots. Once established, Vintage Jade Distylium is highly drought-tolerant and thrives with minimal supplemental irrigation. Deep, infrequent watering encourages healthy root development, lush foliage, and maintains glossy leaf appearance.
  • Pruning: Light pruning in late winter or early spring helps maintain a compact, dense form and promotes fuller branching. Remove dead, damaged, or crossing branches to improve airflow and overall plant health. Heavy pruning is rarely needed; avoid cutting in late fall or winter, as tender new growth may be sensitive to cold.
  • Fertilizing: Apply a slow-release, balanced fertilizer in early spring if soil is poor. In well-draining or average soils, additional feeding is generally unnecessary. Over-fertilization can lead to overly soft growth that may reduce the shrub’s dense habit or cause minor stress in hot weather.
  • Mulching: Apply a 2-3 inch layer of coarse mulch, pine bark, or gravel around the base to conserve moisture, suppress weeds, and regulate soil temperature. Keep mulch slightly away from the crown to prevent crown rot and maintain healthy roots. Inorganic mulches are especially suitable in xeric or formal garden designs.
  • Winter Care: Vintage Jade Distylium is hardy in USDA zones 7-10. In colder regions or during unusual freezes, a light layer of mulch around the base can protect roots. Container-grown plants may benefit from temporary shelter during extreme cold. Generally, this shrub retains its evergreen foliage throughout winter with minimal care.
  • Leggy Growth: Can occur from excessive shade, over-fertilization, or insufficient airflow. Light pruning in early spring encourages compact branching and maintains a tidy appearance.
  • Leaf Yellowing or Drop: Often caused by overwatering, underwatering, or seasonal stress. Adjust irrigation and monitor soil moisture.
  • Fungal Leaf Spots: Brown or black spots may appear under humid or crowded conditions. Remove affected leaves and increase airflow; avoid overhead watering.
  • Pests: Generally pest-resistant, but occasional aphids, scale, or spider mites may appear during hot, dry periods. Rinse leaves or use insecticidal soap as needed.

It grows moderately, typically reaching 3-5 feet tall and wide within 3-4 years. Its dense, compact habit makes it ideal for hedges, borders, mass plantings, or container gardens.

With proper care, Vintage Jade Distylium can thrive for 20-30 years or more. Minimal pruning, well-drained soil, and occasional deep watering maintain long-term health.
