Mojo Dwarf Pittosporum

Pittosporum tobira 'CNI Three'

Mojo Dwarf Pittosporum is a hardy evergreen shrub that brings bold contrast and texture to the landscape. Its dense, rounded form is filled with leathery green leaves edged in creamy white, giving it a clean, refined look year-round. Perfect for borders, pathways, or even containes, Mojo Dwarf stays neat and compact, reaching a mature size of about 2 feet tall and wide.

  • Evergreen shrub
  • Moderate growth rate with compact, rounded habit
  • Glossy green leaves edged in creamy white
  • Great for borders, mass plantings, and containers
  • Adaptable and hardy

Mojo Dwarf Pittosporum performs best in full sun to partial shade and prefers well-drained soil. It's heat-tolerant, drought-resistant once established, and highly adaptable to a range of Texas landscapes. Hardy in USDA zones 7 through 10, this petite powerhouse offers year-round appeal with minimal upkeep.

Mojo Dwarf Pittosporum is an excellent choice for Texas landscapes where low-maintenance beauty is needed. Here’s all it needs to thrive:

  • Watering: Water regularly during the first growing season to establish a strong, fibrous root system. Once established, Mojo Dwarf Pittosporum is drought-tolerant but performs best with occasional deep watering during prolonged dry spells or intense summer heat.
  • Pruning: Prune lightly in late winter or early spring to maintain shape and remove any damaged or crossing branches. Mojo naturally holds a neat, rounded form, so heavy pruning is rarely necessary and should be avoided.
  • Fertilizing: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring to support healthy foliage and steady growth. In poor or sandy soils, a light second feeding in early summer helps maintain density and leaf color without forcing excessive growth.
  • Mulching: Apply a 2-3 inch layer of mulch around the base to conserve moisture, regulate soil temperature, and suppress weeds. Extending the mulch ring helps protect shallow roots and promotes consistent soil conditions.
  • Winter Care: Mojo Dwarf Pittosporum is cold-hardy within its growing range and typically requires no winter protection once established. In colder edge climates, mulch helps insulate roots during freeze-thaw cycles.

Mojo Dwarf Pittosporum is reliable and low-maintenance, though environmental stress and occasional pests may appear:

  • Cold Damage: Leaves may brown or drop after severe or sudden freezes. Plants usually recover in spring, and planting in sheltered locations helps minimize winter injury.
  • Leaf Yellowing: Yellowing foliage may indicate poor drainage or nutrient imbalance. Improving soil structure and applying a balanced fertilizer helps restore healthy color.
  • Spider Mites: Hot, dry weather can lead to fine stippling and dull-looking foliage. Rinsing leaves and maintaining consistent moisture discourages infestations.
  • Root Stress: Prolonged wet soils may cause slowed growth or thinning foliage. Ensuring proper drainage and avoiding overwatering supports long-term root health.
  • Wind Burn: Strong, drying winds may cause minor leaf browning. Planting in protected areas helps preserve foliage quality year-round.

Mojo Dwarf Pittosporum typically lives 25-40 years with proper care. Its woody structure supports long-term landscape performance. Mature plants often become denser and more refined over time.

Mojo Dwarf Pittosporum grows at a slow to moderate rate, adding approximately 6-10 inches per year. A well-defined mature form usually develops in 4-6 years. Growth remains compact and controlled throughout its lifespan.

Small, subtle flowers may attract bees in spring. While blooms are not showy, they still provide seasonal nectar. Foliage remains the primary ornamental feature.

Mojo Dwarf Pittosporum is considered moderately deer-resistant. Browsing is uncommon once plants are established. This makes it a dependable option in many landscapes.

Mojo Dwarf Pittosporum performs very well in containers due to its compact size and tidy habit. Containers highlight its clean form and allow flexible placement. Regular watering is important for container-grown plants.

Division is not recommended due to its woody growth habit. New plants are best established from nursery-grown stock. Attempting division can weaken mature plants.

Mass plantings create clean, uniform evergreen coverage. Repetition enhances structure in both formal and modern designs. Groupings remain low-maintenance and visually cohesive.

Mojo Dwarf Pittosporum pairs beautifully with ornamental grasses, boxwood, loropetalum, and flowering perennials. Contrasting textures add depth and interest. These combinations provide year-round balance.

Once established, it requires very little care beyond occasional pruning and watering. Its evergreen structure reduces seasonal upkeep. Reliable performance makes it a favorite for low-maintenance designs.

Mojo Dwarf Pittosporum stands out for its compact size and polished, evergreen form. It delivers structure without bulk or mess. Few shrubs offer such clean lines with such easy care.
