Sunshine Ligustrum

Ligustrum sinense 'Sunshine'

Sunshine Ligustrum is a bright, non-flowering evergreen shrub that brings lasting color and clean structure to the landscape. Its golden-yellow leaves hold color throughout the year and form a dense, mounded shape. Reaching to 4 feet in height and width, this shrub maintains a rounded habit that responds well to shaping or mass planting. It's vibrant yellow leaves are so striking, many confuse it for flowers, adding interest year round. It's excellent for creating golden accents in borders, under windows, or in front of darker evergreen hedges.

  • An evergreen shrub
  • Bold yellow foliage year-round
  • Dense, mounded growth habit
  • Adds vibrant contrast to plantings
  • Suitable for various landscape uses

Sunshine Ligustrum grows best in full sun and well-drained soil. Other than occasional shaping, this shrub doesn't demand much care. Hardy in USDA zones 6-10, it's well suited to North Texas plantings needing bright foliage and structured volume.

Maintenance

Sunshine Ligustrum is truly an easy-care shrub, thriving on minimal effort. Here’s all you need to do to help it grow beautifully:

  • Watering: Water regularly during the first growing season to establish deep, healthy roots. Once mature, Sunshine Ligustrum is highly drought-tolerant but performs best with occasional deep watering during extended dry periods. Avoid overwatering, especially in heavy soils.
  • Pruning: Prune lightly in late winter or early spring to maintain its rounded, compact shape. While naturally tidy, it can be trimmed several times throughout the season to control size or create a more formal hedge. Avoid cutting into old, leafless wood, as new growth emerges primarily from green stems.
  • Fertilizing: Feed in early spring with a slow-release, balanced fertilizer to promote fresh growth and vivid color. In nutrient-poor soils, a midsummer feeding helps sustain brightness through the hottest months.
  • Mulching: Apply a 2-3 inch layer of mulch around the base to retain moisture, regulate soil temperature, and suppress weeds. Keep mulch a few inches from the stems to prevent rot. Refresh the mulch each spring to maintain even soil moisture.
  • Winter Care: Sunshine Ligustrum holds its color beautifully through winter in most climates. In areas with harsh cold or drying winds, an extra mulch layer helps protect the roots. The shrub may bronze slightly in extreme cold but quickly regains its golden tone once spring warmth returns.

Common Issues and How to Take Care of Them

Sunshine Ligustrum is exceptionally hardy and trouble-free, but a few manageable issues may arise under stress or poor conditions:

  • Root Rot: Can occur in compacted or waterlogged soil. Ensure good drainage and avoid standing water after heavy rain.
  • Aphids: Small insects that cluster on tender new growth. Rinse them off with water or use insecticidal soap for quick control.
  • Scale Insects: Appear as tiny, waxy bumps on stems or leaves. Treat with horticultural oil during dormant season or use neem oil during active growth.
  • Leaf Drop in Winter: In colder regions, temporary leaf loss can occur from frost or windburn. The plant quickly rebounds once temperatures warm.
  • Chlorosis (Yellowing with Green Veins): Indicates an iron deficiency, often from alkaline soil. Apply an iron supplement or soil acidifier to restore vibrant color.

With proper care, it can thrive for 25 years or more. Its tough constitution and adaptable nature make it a long-lasting fixture in both residential and commercial landscapes.

It grows moderately fast, typically 6 to 12 inches per year. Within 3 to 5 years, it reaches full size and develops its dense, glowing canopy.
