Indian Hawthorn Snow White

Rhaphiolepis indica 'Snow White'

Snow White Indian Hawthorn adds classic charm and year-round appeal to any landscape. In spring, it bursts into bloom with fresh white flower clusters that create a beautiful contrast against its rich, evergreen leaves. It reaches about 3 feet in height and the same size in width, and it's perfectly sized for edging walkways, accenting foundations, or brightening up patio containers. Even after the blooms fade, its dense foliage keeps your landscape looking polished and lush.

  • Evergreen shrub
  • Compact, rounded growth habit
  • Moderate growth rate
  • Clusters of clean white flowers blooming in spring
  • Great for borders, foundation plantings, and containers

Hardy in zones 7-10, this plant fits naturally into North Texas landscapes. It prospers in full sun to partial shade and prefers well-drained soil. With minimal care, it delivers lasting beauty and texture throughout the seasons.

Maintenance

Once established, Snow White Indian Hawthorn is nearly effortless to care for - just follow these simple steps:

  • Watering: Water regularly during the first growing season to establish a deep root system. After that, ‘Snow White’ is drought-tolerant but benefits from deep watering every 10-14 days during hot, dry spells. Always allow the top inch of soil to dry between waterings to avoid root rot.
  • Pruning: Prune lightly after flowering to remove spent blooms and maintain a neat, rounded shape. Avoid heavy pruning late in the season, as it can reduce next year’s blooms. Simply remove any dead, damaged, or crossing branches as needed.
  • Fertilizing: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer (10-10-10) once in early spring to encourage healthy new growth and vibrant foliage. Avoid excessive fertilizer, which can lead to soft, leggy growth and fewer flowers.
  • Mulching: Spread a 2-3 inch layer of organic mulch around the base to help retain moisture and regulate soil temperature. Keep mulch about 3 inches away from the main stem to prevent crown rot and pest issues.
  • Spacing: Space plants about 3-4 feet apart for mass plantings or 5 feet apart when used as accents. Adequate spacing promotes good air circulation, which helps prevent leaf spot and mildew.

Common Issues and How to Take Care of Them

Snow White Indian Hawthorn is hardy and forgiving, but it thrives best when kept dry at the roots and airy around the foliage. Here’s how to handle the most common issues:

  • Entomosporium leaf spot: The most common concern, especially in humid conditions. Look for reddish or purple spots on leaves. Water at the base, prune to increase airflow, and apply a fungicide early in spring if needed.
  • Root rot: Occurs in compacted or waterlogged soil. Ensure excellent drainage and avoid overwatering, especially during cooler months.
  • Powdery mildew: Appears as a white film on leaves during extended damp weather. Improve sunlight exposure and avoid overhead watering to prevent recurrence.
  • Aphids and scale: These pests occasionally appear on new growth. Rinse them off with a gentle spray of water or apply insecticidal soap. Beneficial insects, like ladybugs, help naturally control infestations.
  • Yellowing leaves: Often linked to excess water or poor drainage. Adjust watering frequency and check for compacted soil.

With full sun, proper spacing, and moderate watering, Indian Hawthorn Snow White delivers clean, glossy foliage and a bright spring bloom display year after year.

With proper care, it can live 15-20 years or more, making it a long-lasting addition to both home and commercial landscapes.

It grows slowly to moderately, typically reaching its mature size of about 3 to 4 feet tall and wide within 4 to 6 years.

Yes - deer rarely bother Indian Hawthorn due to its leathery foliage and mild bitterness. It’s a reliable choice for open or rural settings.

Definitely, it’s bred for warm southern climates and performs beautifully in full sun, tolerating both heat and moderate drought once established.

Absolutely. It thrives in large patio planters or entryway pots. Just make sure the container drains well and water regularly during the summer heat.

Snow White offers slightly smaller leaves and a denser, more compact shape, with pure white blooms that hold their color even in intense sun. It’s also slightly more cold-hardy and maintains a tidier habit overall.

Yes, bees and butterflies are frequent visitors during its spring bloom, adding gentle movement and vitality to the landscape.

This often signals fungal leaf spot or inconsistent watering. Trim affected leaves, ensure good airflow, and water only at the soil level.

Yes! Its dense growth and uniform shape make it perfect for low hedges, walkway borders, and foundation plantings.

Plant in early spring or early fall, when temperatures are mild and soil moisture is steady. Fall planting allows roots to establish before the following summer heat.
