Variegated Privet Ligustrum

Ligustrum sinense 'Variegatum'

Variegated Privet Ligustrum features distinctive foliage with soft green centers and creamy white margins. This evergreen shrub grows quickly to 6 feet tall and around 6 feet wide, forming a naturally upright habit that can be trimmed into formal shapes or left informal. The variegated leaves create a luminous effect that stands out among darker plantings. Though small white flower clusters may appear in late spring, it is mostly appreciated for its foliage and structure. It serves well as a hedge, accent shrub, or massed along property lines in both residential and commercial settings.

  • A semi-evergreen shrub
  • Cream and green variegated leaves
  • Upright growth habit
  • Brightens shaded or mixed beds
  • Suitable for various landscape uses

Variegated Privet Ligustrum thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers well-drained soil. Hardy in USDA zones 7-11, it's a strong choice for North Texas hedging or focal foliage.

Once established, Variegated Privet Ligustrum thrives with minimal care while providing strong seasonal structure. Here’s how to care for it:

  • Watering: Water deeply and consistently during the first 1-2 years to develop a strong, resilient root system. Once established, Variegated Privet tolerates moderate drought but performs best in evenly moist, well-drained soil. Supplemental watering during hot, dry periods helps maintain leaf color and overall health. Avoid waterlogged or compacted soil.
  • Pruning: Prune in late winter or early spring to remove damaged, crossing, or overly long branches and to maintain a tidy, dense form. Light touch-up pruning can be done after spring growth if shaping is needed. Heavy pruning late in the season may reduce winter hardiness.
  • Fertilizing: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring to support healthy growth and maintain vibrant variegation. Variegated Privet generally performs well with minimal feeding. Excess nitrogen may promote excessive growth and reduce foliage density.
  • Mulching: Apply a 2-3 inch layer of mulch around the root zone to conserve moisture, regulate soil temperature, and protect shallow roots. Keep mulch slightly away from stems to prevent moisture-related problems. Refresh annually.
  • Winter Care: Variegated Privet is cold-hardy once established. Young plants may benefit from protection in exposed, windy locations during their first winter. Mature shrubs recover easily from minor winter stress.

Variegated Privet Ligustrum is generally robust, though a few manageable issues may occur under stressful conditions:

  • Leaf Spot: Brown or dark patches may appear on leaves during humid periods. Improve airflow, space plants appropriately, and remove fallen leaves to reduce recurrence.
  • Aphids: Curling leaves or sticky honeydew indicate aphid feeding. Rinse foliage or apply insecticidal soap as needed.
  • Scale Insects: Small bumps on stems or sticky residue indicate scale presence. Treat with horticultural oil in dormant or early growth stages for effective control.
  • Root Stress: Poor drainage or compacted soil may cause yellowing, stunted growth, or leaf drop. Improve soil structure and adjust irrigation practices.
  • Winter Burn: Browning of leaf edges may occur in extreme cold or drying winter winds. Mulching and wind protection reduce damage risk.

With proper care, it can live 30-50 years, providing a reliable evergreen structure and variegated foliage throughout its lifespan.

It grows moderately, about 12-18 inches per year, and typically reaches a mature, dense form within 4-6 years.

It typically reaches 6-10 feet tall and 4-6 feet wide, forming a dense, upright, or slightly rounded evergreen shrub.

Ligustrum species are generally considered deer-resistant, though light browsing on young foliage may occur.

It can be grown in large containers for several years, particularly in patios or courtyards. Long-term health and full size are best achieved in the ground.

Yes - its dense growth and evergreen foliage make it excellent for formal or informal hedges, screening, and foundation plantings.

It thrives in full sun to partial shade. Brighter light helps maintain strong variegation, while light shade can protect foliage in extremely hot climates.

It may produce small, creamy-white flowers in late spring, followed by dark berries. Flowering is usually light and may be reduced by regular pruning.

Yes - it tolerates heat, moderate pollution, and a variety of soil types, making it a good choice for residential and commercial environments.

Its bright, creamy-white variegation adds year-round visual interest while retaining classic privet durability. It combines toughness with a more refined, contemporary appearance for modern landscapes.
