Rise 'N Shine Redbud

Cercis canadensis 'JN31'

Rise 'N Shine Redbud lives up to its sunny name with radiant golden-yellow leaves that brighten any landscape from spring through fall. Early spring brings soft pink blooms that signal the start of the gardening season and add a touch of color to the landscape. This deciduous tree grows about 20 feet tall and 15 feet wide, forming a compact, rounded canopy ideal for smaller yards, beds, or as a striking specimen. Its cheerful foliage color and moderate growth make it a versatile and uplifting choice for gardeners looking to add a splash of sunshine to their outdoor space.

  • Deciduous tree
  • Moderate growth rate
  • Golden-yellow foliage all season long
  • Soft pink spring flowers
  • Compact, rounded form perfect for small to medium landscapes

Plant Rise 'N Shine Redbud in full sun to partial shade with well-drained soil. Hardy in USDA zones 5 through 9, it’s a radiant addition to North Texas beds and landscapes that keeps the good vibes glowing.

Rise ‘N Shine Redbud brings luminous golden foliage, yet requires only simple, consistent care once established. Here’s everything it needs to perform beautifully:

  • Watering: Water deeply and regularly during the first several years to help establish a stable root system that supports its dense canopy. Once mature, Rise ‘N Shine tolerates moderate drought, though balanced moisture keeps its golden foliage crisp and vibrant.
  • Pruning: Prune in late winter to clear out any crossing or shaded interior branches and to maintain its naturally rounded, cheerful shape. Only light shaping is needed, as the tree develops a clean and compact structure on its own.
  • Fertilizing: Apply a slow-release fertilizer in early spring to encourage strong new growth and maintain bright foliage color. Incorporating compost improves soil structure and supports long-term vigor. Avoid heavy nitrogen, which can soften the golden tones.
  • Mulching: Spread a 2-3 inch mulch layer around the base to retain moisture and regulate soil temperature. Keep mulch from touching the trunk.
  • Winter Care: Rise ‘N Shine is winter-hardy once established and typically shows excellent resilience in cold weather. Young trees may benefit from wind protection during their first winter. Prune any minor winter dieback during late-winter cleanup.

Rise ‘N Shine Redbud is generally strong, but a few manageable issues may appear under stress:

  • Leaf Spot: Irregular brown patches may form during humid or rainy stretches. Removing affected leaves and improving airflow helps reduce future outbreaks.
  • Canker: Sunken, darkened areas on branches indicate canker development. Prune affected limbs and reduce environmental stress to support recovery.
  • Verticillium Wilt: Sudden wilting or branch dieback may occur in soils where the fungus is present. Improving drainage and removing impacted branches may help slow the disease.
  • Aphids: Sticky residue or curled foliage suggests aphid feeding. Water sprays or insecticidal soap restore healthy growth quickly.
  • Leaf Scorch: Brown leaf margins may appear during extreme heat or drought. Regular watering and mulching help protect the bright foliage.

Rise ‘N Shine typically lives 20-40 years when grown in well-drained soil and given steady seasonal care. With proper maintenance, many trees continue producing bright golden foliage well into maturity.

It grows at a moderate pace of 1-2 feet per year. Its cheerful, rounded canopy usually becomes fully expressed within 4-6 years.

Yes - it produces nectar-rich spring blossoms that attract bees and early-season pollinators. The tree contributes meaningfully to pollinator activity at a time when few plants are blooming.

Its small stature and tidy shape make it ideal for courtyards, front-yard displays, and tighter planting areas. Even a single planting adds structure and uplifting color.

It can grow successfully in a large container during its youth, making it suitable for patios or decorative entrances. For long-term health, planting in the ground is recommended.

Deer may browse young leaves, but the tree is generally ignored once established. Protecting young plants during their first seasoseasons usually prevents issues.

Purple Heucheras, evergreen shrubs, Hydrangeas, Japanese Forest Grass, and ornamental grasses provide a beautiful contrast to its golden canopy. These pairings create depth and seasonal richness.

Absolutely - mass plantings create a glowing, sunlit effect that brightens entire landscape beds. In groupings, the trees reinforce each other’s color and form.

Young specimens transplant well when moved in late winter or early spring. With steady moisture afterward, they reestablish quickly and resume healthy growth.

Its foliage holds its bright yellow glow longer and more consistently than many golden cultivars. Combined with its compact size and vigorous habit, it delivers both beauty and reliability.
