Golden Colonnade Ginkgo

Ginkgo biloba ‘JFS-UGA2’

The Golden Colonnade Ginkgo is a distinctive columnar form of Ginkgo biloba, celebrated for its symmetrical structure and strong central leader. Its bright green, fan-shaped leaves create a lush summer canopy that transforms into a brilliant golden yellow in autumn. Growing up to 45 feet tall while maintaining a narrow width of about 25 feet, it’s an ideal choice for lining driveways, defining property boundaries, or adding vertical interest to expansive landscapes.

  • Deciduous shade tree
  • Slow growth rate with upright, columnar habit
  • Bright green fan-shaped foliage turns golden yellow in fall
  • Non-fruiting male cultivar
  • Excellent for urban or formal landscapes

The Golden Colonnade Ginkgo thrives in full sun and well-drained soil, showing impressive adaptability to a range of conditions, including urban pollution and, once established, drought. Hardy in USDA Zones 4-9, it brings timeless elegance and vibrant fall color to any expansive landscape.

Golden Colonnade Ginkgo is a beautiful Texas favorite, prized for its low-maintenance nature. It needs only minimal maintenance to thrive in your landscape, and this is how you can help:

  • Watering: Water regularly during the first growing season to establish a stable root system. After establishment, occasional deep watering during prolonged dry periods supports healthy growth.
  • Pruning: Pruning is generally minimal and limited to removing damaged or crossing branches. Light structural pruning during late winter helps maintain healthy branch development as the tree matures.
  • Fertilizing: Fertilizer is rarely necessary in average garden soils. If growth appears slow, applying a balanced fertilizer in early spring can encourage stronger seasonal development.
  • Mulching: Maintain a 2-3 inch mulch layer around the root zone to conserve soil moisture and regulate soil temperature. Keep mulch slightly away from the trunk to prevent excess moisture accumulation.
  • Winter Care: Established trees tolerate seasonal cold within their growing zones without special protection. Young trees benefit from mulch around the root zone during their first winters to help stabilize soil temperatures.

Golden Colonnade Ginkgo is generally very durable and rarely affected by serious pests or diseases. Most concerns relate to environmental stress rather than pathogens.

  • Transplant Stress: Newly planted trees may grow slowly while roots establish. Consistent watering during the first season helps the plant settle in successfully.
  • Leaf Scorch: Browning along leaf edges may occur during extreme heat or drought. Deep watering during dry periods helps reduce stress.
  • Soil Compaction: Heavy traffic near the base of the tree may restrict root development. Maintaining mulch around the root zone helps protect soil structure.
  • Wind Damage: Strong winds may occasionally break small branches. Removing damaged limbs helps maintain tree health.
  • Nutrient Deficiency: Pale foliage may appear in nutrient-poor soils. Applying a balanced fertilizer can restore healthy growth.

Golden Colonnade Ginkgo can live for many decades. Like other ginkgo trees, mature specimens may remain healthy for well over 100 years. Proper care helps support long-term vitality.

Growth typically averages about 12-24 inches per year. Noticeable height develops within the first decade. Full maturity often occurs within about 25-35 years.

This cultivar is known for its narrow, upright growth habit. The vertical structure gives it a distinct presence compared with broader ginkgo trees. Its form remains relatively uniform as it grows.

The tree naturally grows with branches that stay close to the central trunk. This creates a tall, narrow silhouette. Such growth habits are described as columnar or upright.

This cultivar is typically propagated as a male tree. Male ginkgo trees do not produce the fleshy fruits associated with female plants. This makes them cleaner for landscape use.

As the tree matures, the trunk gradually thickens and develops subtle ridges. The bark becomes more textured with age. Mature specimens often show strong vertical structure.

Male trees avoid the fruit produced by female plants. The fruit from female ginkgo trees can develop a strong odor when it falls. Male cultivars eliminate this concern.

Male selections do not produce seeds because they lack female reproductive structures. This characteristic helps keep the tree tidy. It also prevents unwanted seedlings.

Trees with upright forms take up less horizontal space. This allows them to fit in narrower planting areas. Their vertical structure also creates a distinctive architectural effect.

Even outside the autumn season, the tree’s vertical structure remains visually appealing. The distinctive branching pattern creates a strong silhouette. This architectural form provides year-round character.
