Autumn Gold Ginkgo

Ginkgo biloba ‘Autumn Gold’

Autumn Gold Ginkgo is a male cultivar of the ancient Ginkgo biloba tree, cherished for its upright, symmetrical shape and brilliant golden foliage in fall. The tree features unique, fan-shaped leaves that emerge bright green in spring and turn buttery yellow in autumn. It reaches a mature height of 50 feet with a spread of 40 feet, forming a broadly pyramidal to rounded canopy. Ideal as a shade tree, street tree, or focal point in any large landscape.

  • Deciduous shade tree
  • Slow growth rate with upright, symmetrical habit
  • Distinctive fan-shaped green leaves
  • Brilliant golden fall color
  • Male cultivar (non-fruiting)

Autumn Gold Ginkgo is incredibly hardy, tolerating urban conditions, heat, and a range of soil types. It thrives in full sun and is suitable for USDA zones 3 through 9. With minimal care, this tree offers year-round visual appeal.

Once established, Autumn Gold Ginkgo becomes notably low-maintenance and develops into a durable landscape tree that requires only modest seasonal attention. Here’s what it needs:

  • Watering: Water consistently during the first growing season to help establish a strong root system. After establishment, occasional deep watering during extended dry periods helps maintain healthy foliage and steady growth.
  • Pruning: Pruning is typically minimal and usually limited to removing damaged or crossing branches. Light structural pruning in late winter helps maintain a balanced canopy as the tree matures.
  • Fertilizing: Fertilizer is rarely necessary in average soils. If growth appears slow, applying a balanced fertilizer in early spring can encourage stronger seasonal development.
  • Mulching: Maintain a 2-3 inch mulch layer around the root zone to conserve soil moisture and regulate soil temperature. Keep mulch slightly away from the trunk to prevent excess moisture buildup.
  • Winter Care: Established trees tolerate seasonal cold within their growing zones without special protection. Young trees benefit from mulch around the root zone during their first winters to help stabilize soil temperatures.

Autumn Gold Ginkgo is generally durable and rarely experiences serious pest or disease problems. Occasional environmental stress may appear, but most concerns remain minor.

  • Leaf Scorch: Browning along leaf edges may occur during prolonged drought or extreme heat. Deep watering during dry periods helps reduce stress.
  • Young Tree Transplant Shock: Newly planted trees may show slow growth or temporary leaf drop. Consistent watering during establishment helps the tree recover.
  • Root Compaction: Heavy foot traffic near the root zone may restrict root development. Maintaining mulch around the base helps protect the soil structure.
  • Wind Damage: Strong winds may occasionally damage small branches. Pruning affected limbs helps maintain tree structure.
  • Nutrient Deficiency: Pale foliage may appear if soil nutrients are insufficient. A balanced fertilizer application can help restore healthy growth.

Autumn Gold Ginkgo is an extremely long-lived tree. Under favorable conditions, ginkgo trees can live for well over 100 years. Mature specimens may remain healthy for generations.

Growth generally averages about 12-24 inches per year. Noticeable canopy development occurs within the first decade. Full maturity often takes 25-40 years.

This cultivar is widely admired for its brilliant golden fall foliage. The leaves often change color all at once, creating a dramatic display. Its vibrant autumn color makes it a standout landscape tree.

As temperatures cool, pigments within the leaves shift and reveal vibrant golden tones. The color change often occurs quickly across the entire canopy. This creates one of the most striking fall displays among shade trees.

This cultivar is typically grown as a male selection. Male trees do not produce the fleshy fruits associated with female ginkgo trees. This makes them cleaner for landscape use.

Young trees often grow with a narrow form. As they mature, the canopy gradually broadens and becomes more rounded. This change creates a balanced and elegant silhouette.

The tree produces a dense canopy of green fan-shaped leaves throughout the growing season. These leaves create a soft and textured appearance. The foliage remains attractive until fall color develops.

The bark gradually becomes ridged and textured over time. Mature trunks develop a rugged appearance. This feature adds character to older trees.

The tree is known for its durability and adaptability once established. It tolerates many urban conditions better than some other shade trees. This resilience makes it a dependable landscape choice.

Even outside of autumn, the tree provides ornamental value through its distinctive foliage and graceful branching. The unique leaf shape adds texture to the canopy. This keeps the tree visually appealing throughout the growing season.
