Empress Sun Red Verbena

Verbena hybrida ‘Empress Sun Red’

Empress Sun Red Verbena is a herbaceous perennial prized for its vibrant red flowers that bloom steadily from spring to fall. This plant features a trailing, mounding habit that spreads out to create a striking carpet of color. Empress Sun Red Verbena grows up to 1 foot in height and 1.5 feet in width, making it ideal for containers, hanging baskets, sunny borders, or mass plantings.

  • Herbaceous perennial
  • Fast growth rate with trailing, spreading form
  • Vivid red flower clusters
  • Attracts pollinators
  • Excellent for containers, beds, and borders

Thriving in full sun and well-drained soil, Empress Sun Red Verbena is a go-to for hot, dry areas. Hardy in USDA zones 7 through 11, this plant is incredibly heat- and drought-tolerant at maturity. To maintain its charm, just trim back withered flowers to encourage continual blooming throughout the season.

Empress Sun Red Verbena is an easygoing annual that delivers nonstop color with minimal effort once established. Still, following a few care guidelines will help it reach peak performance:

  • Watering: Water deeply and regularly during the first few weeks after planting. Once established, it prefers moderate moisture - water when the top inch of soil feels dry. Avoid constant sogginess, as verbena dislikes wet feet.
  • Pruning: Lightly trim spent blooms and leggy stems every few weeks to encourage fresh growth and continuous flowering. A mid-summer rejuvenation prune (cutting back by one-third) keeps plants compact and blooming strong.
  • Fertilizing: Feed with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer every 4-6 weeks during the growing season. Avoid excessive nitrogen, which encourages foliage over flowers.
  • Mulching: Apply a 1-2 inch layer of mulch to retain moisture and suppress weeds, but keep it a few inches away from the base of the plant to prevent stem rot.
  • Spacing: When mass-planting, space 10-12 inches apart to allow good airflow and prevent mildew, especially in humid Texas summers.

Common Issues and How to Take Care of Them

Empress Sun Red Verbena is generally resilient, but heat, humidity, and moisture fluctuations can occasionally invite problems:

  • Powdery mildew: Appears as a white film on leaves, often in crowded or humid settings. Improve airflow, avoid overhead watering, and treat with a fungicide if needed.
  • Spider mites: These tiny pests cause stippled or faded foliage. Rinse plants with a strong stream of water and apply insecticidal soap if infestations persist.
  • Aphids: Clusters of soft-bodied insects feeding on new growth can be controlled with horticultural oil or neem-based sprays.
  • Root rot: Caused by consistently soggy soil. Always plant in well-draining soil and let the top layer dry slightly between waterings.
  • Petal browning: Often due to overhead watering in high heat. Water early in the day and at soil level to preserve bloom quality.
  • Legginess: Natural in mid-summer - just shear lightly to restore shape and encourage new flowering stems.

With proper spacing, drainage, and pruning, Empress Sun Red Verbena stays lush, vibrant, and colorful all season long.

It blooms continuously from spring through the first frost, providing months of vibrant red color with only light maintenance.

Yes - it was bred for extreme sun and heat tolerance, thriving in the toughest Texas summers.

Absolutely. After rooting in, it tolerates dry spells well, though consistent watering encourages the most prolific blooms.

Yes! Butterflies and hummingbirds love the nectar-rich red blooms, making it a great choice for pollinator gardens.

Yes - removing spent blooms encourages continuous flowering and prevents seed formation, which can slow new growth. It takes just a few minutes a week and keeps the plant looking fresh.

Perfectly suited! Empress Sun Red Verbena trails beautifully over container edges while maintaining a dense center of blooms. Just make sure pots have good drainage and water a bit more frequently in summer.

Some plants can naturalize in the garden and live for many years. However, they usually last only 2-3 years, so you should plan on replacing them in that time.

You can, take cuttings before the first frost and grow them indoors in bright light until spring planting time.

Simply shear it back by about one-third, water deeply, and fertilize lightly. Within two weeks, you’ll see a flush of new foliage and fresh flowers returning in full force.

Yes. The mildly aromatic foliage deters deer and rabbits, making it a reliable option for open landscapes where browsing is common.
