Achillea x 'Moonshine'

Moonshine Yarrow is a stunning perennial, adding a pop of color to any landscape. It showcases bright yellow flowers blooming from spring to summer. The foliage is feathery and aromatic. This perennial is a wonderful addition to borders and edges, and it looks especially striking when used in mass plantings. It could be used as a groundcover. Reaches up to 1 foot tall and 2 feet wide at maturity.

  • A herbaceous perennial
  • Upright, compact growth habit
  • Moderate growth rate
  • Bright yellow flowers against the silver-green foliage
  • Suitable for various types of landscape uses

Hardy in zones 3-8, it will fit right into your North Texas landscape. Moonshine Yarrow thrives in full sun, in well-drained soil. Deadhead spent blooms to promote new, healthy growth. With a bit of care, this resilient plant will be a valuable addition to your landscape.

Maintenance

Moonshine Yarrow is one of those plants that practically thrives on being ignored once it settles in. Here’s how to keep it looking its best:

  • Watering: Keep the soil evenly moist through the first growing season so the roots can establish deeply. After that, Moonshine Yarrow becomes impressively drought-tolerant and generally only needs occasional deep watering during prolonged dry spells. Avoid frequent shallow watering - it leads to floppy growth.
  • Pruning: Trim away spent flower clusters throughout the season to encourage fresh blooms and maintain a clean appearance. In late fall or early spring, cut back the entire clump to just a few inches above the ground to promote compact, vigorous regrowth. Avoid pruning heavily in midsummer when it’s stressed by heat.
  • Fertilizing: Feed lightly once in early spring with a balanced, low-nitrogen fertilizer. Too much fertilizer encourages lanky, weak stems, so less truly is more. Many gardeners skip fertilizer altogether when planting in moderately rich soil.
  • Mulching: Apply a thin layer of mulch to help with moisture retention and weed suppression, but keep it minimal - this plant prefers lean, airy soil. Keep mulch away from the crown to prevent rot and maintain dryness around the base.

Winter care: Moonshine Yarrow is cold-hardy and typically needs no extra protection. In very cold climates, a light winter mulch is helpful during the first year. Old foliage may brown in winter but regrows cleanly in spring.

Common Issues and How to Take Care of Them

Moonshine Yarrow is known for its resilience, but it can occasionally experience stress or minor pest issues if neglected:

  • Root Rot: Happens in heavy, poorly drained soil. Improve drainage, amend with grit, or relocate to a drier area.
  • Powdery Mildew: Appears in humid conditions. Improve air circulation and avoid overhead watering; trim affected foliage if needed.
  • Flopping Stems: Usually caused by excess water or too much shade. Reduce irrigation and move to a sunnier spot if possible.
  • Yellowing Foliage: Often a sign of overwatering or overly rich soil. Let the soil dry more between waterings and avoid high-nitrogen fertilizers.

With proper drainage, light feeding, and occasional pruning, Moonshine Yew remains one of the most dependable, elegant evergreens for long-term landscape structure.

It’s a long-lasting perennial, often thriving for many years when grown in well-drained soil with plenty of sunlight.

This yarrow establishes fairly quickly, often forming a full, bushy mound within one to two growing seasons. Initial growth may be slow as roots establish, but once settled, it spreads steadily and fills in gaps naturally.

Yes - bees, butterflies, and beneficial insects love its flat, nectar-rich flower clusters throughout the summer.

Very much so. Its aromatic foliage and slightly rough texture make it unappealing to browsing animals.

Absolutely, as long as the pot drains well. Containers may need more frequent watering than in-ground plantings.

It handles both exceptionally well. Once established, the plant requires minimal water and thrives in full sun, making it perfect for dry, hot regions or xeriscape-style gardens

It spreads moderately via underground rhizomes, gradually forming larger clumps. This spreading habit allows it to fill beds and borders attractively while remaining controllable through occasional division.

Divide every 2-3 years in early spring or early fall to keep the plant dense, healthy, and vigorously blooming.

Usually from too much shade, excess nutrients, or overwatering. Leaner soil and more sun help maintain upright growth.

Definitely. Its blooms last a long time in arrangements and even dry beautifully for everlasting bouquets.
