Endurascape Red Verbena

Verbena x 'Balendred'

EnduraScape Red Verbena delivers non-stop, bright red blooms on a trailing, well-branched plant that thrives in summer heat. Flowering from spring to fall, it creates a vibrant carpet of color ideal for borders, hanging baskets, or mixed containers. This low-growing variety reaches up to 1 foot in height and spreads up to 1.5 feet wide, maintaining a tidy, cascading shape. Its consistent bloom and drought tolerance make it a reliable choice for high-impact seasonal plantings.

  • A herbaceous perennial
  • Vivid red blooms all season long
  • Low, spreading growth habit
  • Strong performer in heat and sun
  • Great for borders, baskets, and containers

Hardy in USDA zones 7-10, this perennial performs beautifully as a long-season choice in North Texas. Plant in full sun with well-drained soil. Deadhead as needed to refresh blooms and trim lightly to maintain shape.

With simple, consistent care early on, Endurascape Red Verbena rewards gardeners with months of vivid red blooms and a tidy, spreading habit. Here’s what it needs to thrive:

  • Watering: Water consistently during the first several weeks after planting to help roots establish evenly and promote fast coverage. Once established, Endurascape Red Verbena becomes drought-tolerant and performs best with deep, infrequent watering rather than frequent shallow irrigation.
  • Pruning: Prune lightly throughout the growing season to encourage dense branching and continuous flowering. Shearing back spent blooms and elongated stems every few weeks helps maintain a compact shape and prevents thinning as the season progresses.
  • Fertilizing: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer at planting to support early growth and flower production. If flowering slows mid-season, a light supplemental feeding can restore vigor without encouraging excessive leafy growth.
  • Mulching: Apply a thin layer of mulch around the base of the plant to conserve moisture, regulate soil temperature, and suppress weeds. Keep mulch slightly away from the crown to prevent moisture accumulation around stems.
  • Winter Care: In warm climates, Endurascape Red Verbena may survive winter with minimal protection and benefit from light cleanup in early spring. In colder regions, treat it as an annual and remove plants after frost to reduce disease carryover in garden beds.

Endurascape Red Verbena is durable and dependable, though a few manageable issues can appear during periods of stress or unfavorable weather.

  • Powdery Mildew: A white, powdery coating may develop on leaves during humid conditions, particularly when airflow is limited. Improve circulation and avoid overhead watering to keep foliage dry and reduce recurrence.
  • Spider Mites: Fine speckling on leaves and light webbing along stems may appear during hot, dry weather. Rinsing foliage regularly and increasing humidity helps keep populations under control.
  • Aphids: Clusters of small insects may gather on new growth, causing distortion and sticky residue. Wash them off with water or use insecticidal soap if infestations persist.
  • Leggy Growth: Stems can stretch and flowering may thin if plants are not trimmed periodically. Regular pruning encourages compact growth and restores dense, vibrant blooms.

Endurascape Red Verbena is most often grown as an annual, but in warm climates it can persist as a short-lived perennial for 2-3 years. Its long flowering season makes it a highly rewarding plant even when grown for a single year.

Endurascape Red Verbena establishes quickly, usually filling out within 6-8 weeks after planting. Full bloom density and coverage develop by early summer and continue until frost.

Endurascape Red Verbena attracts butterflies throughout the growing season with its bright red blooms. Bees also visit regularly, contributing to a lively, pollinator-friendly garden.

Endurascape Red Verbena is generally avoided by deer due to its foliage texture and scent. While occasional browsing can occur, damage is typically light and short-lived.

Endurascape Red Verbena is not well-suited for division and is best planted from nursery-grown starts. Division often results in uneven recovery and reduced flowering.

Endurascape Red Verbena excels in mass plantings, creating bold, continuous color across beds and borders. Its uniform growth habit helps plantings stay cohesive throughout the season.

Endurascape Red Verbena pairs beautifully with ornamental grasses, salvias, lantana, and other heat-tolerant companions. Upright or textured plants provide contrast and visual balance.

Endurascape Red Verbena spreads gently to fill available space without becoming invasive. Occasional pruning keeps growth tidy and controlled.

Once established, Endurascape Red Verbena requires minimal care beyond periodic pruning. Its durability makes it a strong choice for residential and commercial plantings alike.

Endurascape Red Verbena stands out for its intense color, strong heat endurance, and season-long bloom performance. It delivers consistent, eye-catching results when many flowering plants struggle in summer conditions.
