Empress Sun Cherry Verbena thrives in full sun and well-drained soil. This plant thrives in USDA zones 9 through 11, making it perfect for the hottest areas of Texas. It’s incredibly heat- and drought-tolerant once established. It doesn't need much to maintain its beauty - simply trim withered flowers as necessary to encourage more blooms in season.

Empress Sun Cherry Verbena is a low-maintenance perennial that requires little care, but with proper attention, it ensures continuous flowering and healthy foliage throughout the growing season.

  • Watering: Water regularly during establishment to encourage deep roots. Once established, it is moderately drought-tolerant, preferring deep watering during dry spells. Avoid overwatering, which can lead to root rot and fungal issues.
  • Pruning: Deadhead spent blooms regularly to promote continuous flowering and maintain a neat appearance. Light trimming can also help control plant shape and encourage bushier growth. Avoid heavy pruning into old woody stems, as this may reduce bloom potential.
  • Fertilizing: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring to support strong growth and vibrant flowers. For extended blooming, supplemental liquid feeding every 4-6 weeks during the growing season can enhance flower production.
  • Mulching: Apply a 2-3 inch layer of mulch to conserve soil moisture, moderate temperature, and suppress weeds. Keep mulch a few inches away from the crown to prevent rot.
  • Winter Care: In cooler climates, Empress Sun Cherry Verbena can tolerate light frost. Apply mulch around the base for insulation, and consider covering container plants during severe freezes.

Common Issues and How to Take Care of Them

  • Powdery Mildew: White, powdery spots on leaves may develop in humid conditions. Ensure good air circulation, avoid overhead watering, and treat with fungicide if necessary.
  • Aphids: Small, sap-sucking insects that distort leaves and flowers. Spray with a strong jet of water or treat with insecticidal soap.
  • Spider Mites: Tiny pests that cause yellowing or stippling on foliage, particularly in hot, dry conditions. Increase humidity or use horticultural oil if infestations occur.
  • Root Rot: Caused by poorly drained soils or overwatering. Ensure soil drains well and avoid waterlogged conditions.
  • Leaf Drop: Sudden leaf loss may indicate stress from drought, excessive heat, or disease. Maintain consistent watering and remove affected leaves promptly.

With full sun, well-drained soil, and regular deadheading, Empress Sun Cherry Verbena will produce abundant, long-lasting blooms, providing a vibrant display from spring through fall.

It grows moderately fast, reaching 12-18 inches tall with a similar spread in one growing season. Regular deadheading encourages fuller growth and more blooms.

Spring or early fall is ideal, giving roots time to establish before the heat of summer or the cold of winter.

Water deeply once or twice per week during dry spells. Established plants are moderately drought-tolerant but bloom best with consistent moisture.

Yes, deer typically avoid it due to its aromatic foliage and slightly bitter taste.

Absolutely. Empress Sun Cherry Verbena thrives in large pots with well-draining soil and performs beautifully on patios or balconies.

As a perennial, it can live 3-5 years, and with proper care, it may continue blooming annually in mild climates or with occasional replanting.

Yes, it tolerates heat well, but good airflow is essential in humid climates to prevent fungal issues like powdery mildew.

No, Empress Sun Cherry Verbena has a naturally upright and bushy habit. Occasional light pruning is sufficient to maintain shape and remove any weak or leggy growth, ensuring a tidy appearance.

Yes, softwood cuttings taken in spring or early summer root readily with proper care, providing a cost-effective way to expand your plantings. Using a rooting hormone and keeping the cuttings in a humid environment improves success rates.

Empress Sun Cherry Verbena is generally non-toxic to pets, though ingestion in large quantities may cause your stomach to become upset.
