Asiatic Jasmine

Trachelospermum asiaticum

This stunning plant is versatile and beautiful. The leaves are oval-shaped and glossy, creating a lush, year-round display of color. As a vigorous grower, Asiatic Jasmine reaches 1 foot in height and spreads to 3 feet in width, making it the perfect groundcover for your landscape. It's a great, low-maintenance choice for containers and borders, too.

  • Evergreen groundcover
  • Climbing growth habit
  • Moderate growth rate
  • Glossy, dark green foliage

Hardy in zones 7-11, this perennial will thrive in your North Texas landscape. Fares well in at least 4-6 hours of direct sunlight but likes partial shade as well. Well-drained, fertile soil is ideal for Asiatic Jasmine. Allow for 1.5 feet apart when planting, and enjoy a dense, attractive groundcover that will fill in any blank spaces while providing a delightful fragrance.

While known for being hardy and low-maintenance, proper care can help it stay vibrant and healthy for many seasons to come.

  • Watering: Make sure to keep the soil consistently moist during the first growing season by watering regularly to help roots establish deeply. Once mature, Asiatic Jasmine is quite drought-tolerant, but it performs best with occasional deep watering during long, dry spells or extreme heat.  Avoid overwatering, as this plant dislikes soggy conditions and prefers slightly dry intervals between waterings.
  • Pruning: Trim in late winter or early spring before new growth starts to remove dead stems, tidy the edges, and manage spread. During the growing season, you can lightly shear it to maintain shape and density, especially along walkways or borders. If using it as a climbing groundcover or wall cover, occasional pruning will help direct its growth and prevent it from becoming woody.
  • Fertilizing: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring to encourage healthy growth and a rich green color. For established plants, a light feeding once or twice a year is enough, as too much fertilizer can cause excessive leafiness and reduce the plant’s compact form. In poor soils, a mid-summer feeding can help maintain vigor through the heat.
  • Mulching: Spread a 2-3 inch layer of mulch around the base or throughout the planted area to help retain soil moisture, reduce weeds, and protect roots during temperature fluctuations. Keep mulch a few inches away from the plant’s crown to prevent rot. Organic mulch, such as pine bark works especially well and improves soil texture over time.

Common Issues and How to Take Care of Them

Asiatic Jasmine is a hardy plant, but it may occasionally encounter some issues, and it's important to identify them on time, and know how to treat them:

Fungal Diseases: Some of the common fungal diseases include powdery mildew and leaf spot. These issues can be linked to poor air circulation.

Spider Mites: These tiny pests may appear in hot, dry conditions, leaving stippled or faded leaves.

Scale Insects: Scale may attach to stems or leaves, appearing as small brown or white bumps that feed on sap and weaken the plant.

Root Rot: Overwatering or poor drainage can lead to root rot, causing yellowing leaves and plant decline.

Monitoring your plant and reacting promptly to any problems, while maintaining good airflow and proper soil moisture, will help your Asiatic Jasmine stay healthy and thriving.

Asiatic Jasmine spreads moderately fast, typically covering several feet per year once established. Expect full ground coverage within 1-2 growing seasons under ideal conditions.

It stays low and dense, growing about 6-12 inches tall while spreading horizontally across the ground or climbing low structures if supported.

Early spring or fall is ideal, allowing roots to establish in mild temperatures before summer heat or winter cold.

Once mature, water deeply every 10-14 days during dry spells. It prefers consistent moisture but will tolerate brief drought periods.

Yes! It thrives in partial to full shade. In full shade, it grows slower and may appear darker green, while full sun encourages denser foliage.

Occasional pruning keeps it tidy and prevents it from invading nearby areas. Trim it back hard every few years if it becomes overgrown, as it rebounds quickly.

A balanced, slow-release fertilizer with equal nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium (such as 18-6-8 or 18-6-12) works best. Apply lightly in spring and mid-summer.

Yes, it’s evergreen in most climates, keeping its leaves year-round. In colder regions, it may experience partial dieback but quickly recovers in spring.

While durable, it does not tolerate much foot traffic. Light foot traffic is fine, but frequent walking can cause damage and thin growth over time.

Cut the plants back to about 3 inches tall in early spring. This encourages fresh growth and restores density. You can also lightly fertilize after pruning to help it recover quickly.
