Mondo

Ophiopogon japonicus

The Mondo is an evergreen grass type, typically used as groundcover. It's quite a short plant, growing only 9 inches in height and 12 in width. When it comes to foliage, it has emerald green leaves reminiscent of grass blades that arch naturally. This plant is also very versatile . It makes an excellent border grass or texturizer in your landscape.

  • Evergreen groundcover
  • Moderate growth rate
  • Deep green, grass-like leaves
  • Clumping growth habit
  • A versatile choice for beds and borders

The Mondo grass loves part shade and performs best in well-drained soils, so choose your planting spot accordingly. It's quite heat hardy, growing right at home in zones 6 through 11, making it perfect for almost all of Texas. Since this plant doesn't grow much, you don't have to do a lot to maintain its usual charm.

Maintenance

Once established, Mondo Grass is one of the easiest and most reliable groundcovers you can grow. Here’s how minimal attention can help it thrive:

  • Watering: Water regularly during the first growing season to encourage deep root growth. Afterward, Mondo Grass requires little supplemental water except during extended dry periods. Avoid prolonged soggy conditions, which can lead to root issues.
  • Pruning: Minimal pruning is needed. In late winter or very early spring, trim back old or damaged foliage to make way for fresh new growth. Use shears or a mower set to a high blade height for large plantings. Avoid pruning mid-season, as it can interrupt the plant’s natural rhythm.
  • Fertilizing: Feed once in early spring with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer to support healthy, dense foliage. Avoid over-fertilizing, which may cause pale growth or encourage weeds in mass plantings.
  • Mulching: Apply a 1-2 inch layer of mulch to retain soil moisture, regulate temperature, and reduce weeds. Keep mulch an inch or two away from the crown to prevent rot. Refresh annually for neatness and consistency.
  • Winter care: In colder climates, Mondo Grass may brown slightly in winter but quickly greens up again in spring. A light layer of mulch around the base helps protect roots from extreme cold.

Common Issues and How to Take Care of Them

Mondo Grass is remarkably tough and pest-resistant, but occasional issues can appear if growing conditions are extreme or crowded:

  • Root Rot: The most common issue, caused by poor drainage or overwatering. Ensure well-drained soil and avoid standing water.
  • Slugs and Snails: These pests can nibble on tender new leaves. Use organic slug bait or barriers if needed.
  • Fungal Leaf Spot: Appears as small brown or black spots during very humid conditions. Improve airflow and remove affected leaves to prevent spread.
  • Weed Intrusion: Slow spreaders like Mondo can allow weeds to appear in gaps. Keep beds mulched and edge plantings annually to maintain clean borders.
  • Browning Tips: Often a result of excess fertilizer salts or heat stress. Flush the soil with water and trim affected leaves to restore a fresh appearance.

With minimal care - mainly trimming and occasional feeding - Mondo Grass provides lasting texture, contrast, and structure to shaded or partially shaded landscapes.

Mondo Grass is a true long-term perennial. Individual clumps can thrive for decades when undisturbed, slowly expanding over time into dense, evergreen mats.

It’s a slow to moderate grower. Expect it to fill in over 2-3 seasons when planted closely. Once established, it spreads steadily by short underground runners.

Yes - it divides easily. Every 3-4 years, dig up mature clumps in early spring, separate sections by hand, and replant them to rejuvenate older beds or expand coverage.

Light to moderate foot traffic is fine. It’s sturdy enough for pathways or borders but not ideal for heavily used walkways. Use stepping stones in high-traffic areas.

Yes, both tend to avoid it due to its tough, fibrous texture, making it a dependable choice for wildlife-prone landscapes.

Definitely. It performs beautifully in pots, troughs, and under taller container plants as a soft-textured filler. It adapts well to confined spaces and maintains its neat form year-round.

No, it’s a gentle spreader. It expands gradually by rhizomes, staying well-behaved and easy to control even in small garden spaces.

Very quickly. Within 3-4 weeks in warm weather, new fresh blades emerge to replace the old ones, leaving the planting vibrant again by early spring.

Absolutely. Its dense root network holds soil effectively on gentle slopes and banks, preventing erosion while adding attractive greenery.

Yes - it pairs beautifully with ferns, hostas, liriope, and compact shrubs. Its deep green foliage makes a perfect contrast to flowering perennials or variegated leaves.
