Stella D'Oro Daylily

Hemerocallis ‘Stella de Oro’

Stella D'Oro Daylily is a summer-blooming perennial, ideal for containers, borders, and edges. It features vibrant yellow flowers with ruffled edges and arching, vibrant green leaves. The flowers are fragrant too, and its stunning color will brighten up any part of your landscape. This plant blooms throughout summer. It grows up to 1.5 feet tall and the same size wide at maturity. It reaches maturity approximately 2-3 years after planting.

  • A herbaceous perennial
  • Clumping growth habit
  • Fast growth rate
  • Attractive trumpet-like flowers
  • Suitable for various types of landscape use

Hardy in zones 3-9, this tough perennial will feel right at home in the North Texas climate. It's adaptable, tolerating a variety of soil conditions. However, it's ideal to plant it in well-drained, fertile soil. Stella D'Oro Daylily prospers in full sun, although it will tolerate some partial shade.

Hardy, drought-tolerant, and nearly carefree, Stella d'Oro is the definition of reliability and enduring charm. Here’s all it needs:

  • Watering: Water regularly during the first growing season to establish a healthy root system. Once mature, Stella de Oro thrives with moderate moisture and tolerates short dry spells with ease. Deep, occasional watering during extended heat encourages continuous blooming and keeps foliage lush.
  • Pruning: Deadhead spent flowers daily to promote nonstop reblooming and maintain a neat appearance. Once a full bloom cycle ends, trim the scapes (flower stalks) down to the base to stimulate new bud formation.
  • Fertilizing: Feed in early spring with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer or apply a light layer of compost around the base. A midsummer feeding after the first bloom flush helps sustain long-term flowering. Avoid heavy nitrogen.
  • Mulching: Apply a 2-3 inch layer of mulch or shredded bark around the plant to conserve moisture, suppress weeds, and moderate soil temperature. Keep mulch slightly away from the crown to ensure airflow and prevent decay.
  • Winter Care: Stella de Oro is exceptionally hardy, remaining dependable through both freezing winters and scorching summers. After frost, cut back old foliage and apply a thin mulch layer once the ground freezes to protect the crown.

‘Stella d'Oro’ is famously low-maintenance, though occasional minor issues can arise under prolonged dampness or poor airflow:

  • Spider Mites: Leaves appear stippled or dull in hot, dry weather. Rinse foliage frequently or apply horticultural oil to prevent buildup.
  • Daylily Rust: Orange or yellow pustules form on the undersides of leaves in humid climates. Remove affected foliage and use a rust-control fungicide if necessary.
  • Thrips: Small insects feed on flower petals, causing streaks or distortion. Remove affected blooms and use neem oil for prevention.
  • Slugs and Snails: Irregular holes appear in leaves, especially after rain. Use traps or copper barriers to minimize feeding.
  • Botrytis Blight: Gray mold forms on petals in cool, damp conditions. Prune infected blooms and ensure good airflow.

It’s one of the longest-lived perennials available, often thriving for decades. Once established, it blooms faithfully year after year with minimal care.

It establishes rapidly, often flowering in its first season. Mature clumps fill out beautifully within two to three years, creating dense mounds of green and gold.

Yes - its bright yellow blooms attract bees, butterflies, and even hummingbirds. It’s a consistent favorite in pollinator-friendly gardens.

It carries a light, sweet scent that’s most noticeable in the morning. The fragrance pairs perfectly with its sunny, cheerful blooms.

Absolutely - it’s one of the best daylilies for pots due to its compact size and continuous flowering. Use a well-draining potting mix and water regularly during hot weather.

Mostly - while deer may occasionally sample buds, they tend to avoid the mature foliage. It’s a dependable option for gardens with mild browsing pressure.

Exceptionally well. Once established, it thrives in full sun and tolerates dry conditions, continuing to bloom through intense summer heat.

Definitely. Its uniform height, durability, and nonstop color make it ideal for borders, slopes, and public landscapes. It’s especially prized for low-maintenance commercial plantings.

Every 3-5 years in early spring or fall is ideal. Division keeps clumps healthy, promotes reblooming, and allows easy propagation.

It was the first truly everblooming daylily, and it remains unmatched in consistency and versatility. Stella de Oro delivers radiant color, compact form, and unstoppable reliability - a golden standard for gardens everywhere.
