Mexican Mint Marigold

Tagetes lucida

Mexican Mint Marigold is a versatile herbaceous perennial valued for its fine, glossy green foliage and its fragrant, anise-like scent. From late spring until fall, it produces clusters of small golden-yellow flowers that attract pollinators and brighten late-season beds. The upright, bushy growth habit reaches 12 inches tall and spreads 12 inches wide, offering both ornamental and culinary appeal. Often used as a substitute for tarragon, the leaves can be harvested fresh. Its compact size, tidy form, and strong heat tolerance make it especially useful for regions such as North Texas.

  •  A herbaceous perennial
  •  Golden-yellow flowers from spring to fall
  •  Aromatic green foliage with culinary use
  •  Upright growth habit
  •  Great for seasonal beds, herb displays, or containers

Plant in full sun with well-drained soil. Remove spent blooms to extend flowering and cut back in early spring to maintain shape. While typically grown outdoors, it can be used as an indoor herb in bright, sunny spaces.

Mexican Mint Marigold performs exceptionally well in warm climates and provides continuous color with minimal care. Here’s all it needs to grow beautifully:

  • Watering: Water consistently during the first growing season to establish a strong, deep root system. Once established, Mexican Mint Marigold is moderately drought-tolerant but thrives with occasional deep watering during extended dry spells. Avoid overly wet or soggy soil, which can lead to root problems and decline.
  • Pruning: Light pruning in late winter or early spring promotes compact growth and encourages abundant flowering. Pinching back young plants early in the season helps develop a fuller, bushier form. Remove spent flowers throughout the bloom season to maintain a tidy appearance and prolong flowering. Avoid heavy pruning in late fall, as tender new growth may be damaged by frost.
  • Fertilizing: Mexican Mint Marigold is not a heavy feeder. Feed lightly with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring if your soil is poor or sandy. In fertile or average soils, additional fertilization is usually unnecessary. Over-fertilization can produce excessive leafy growth at the expense of flowers and aroma, so moderation is key.
  • Mulching: Apply a 2-3 inch layer of organic mulch, gravel, or pine fines around the base of the plant to conserve moisture, suppress weeds, and regulate soil temperature. Keep mulch slightly away from the crown to prevent rot and ensure good airflow. Mulching also helps reduce soil erosion and can provide a clean, polished appearance in formal or naturalistic plantings.
  • Winter Care: Mexican Mint Marigold is hardy in USDA zones 7-11. In colder climates, it may die back to the ground during frost, but typically returns in spring with vigorous new growth. Applying a light layer of mulch around the roots in winter can protect against freeze damage.
  • Leggy Growth: Insufficient sunlight or lack of pruning can lead to tall, floppy stems. Ensure at least 6 hours of sun per day and pinch or prune lightly in early spring to maintain a compact habit.
  • Root Rot: Overwatering or poorly draining soil can result in root decline. Plant in well-drained soils and water deeply but infrequently. Raised beds or amended soils may improve drainage in heavier clay conditions.
  • Reduced Flowering: Too much shade, excess fertilizer, or inconsistent watering may reduce blooms. Provide consistent sun, moderate watering, and avoid rich soils that encourage leafy growth.
  • Pests: Mexican Mint Marigold is generally pest-resistant. Occasionally, aphids or leafhoppers may appear. Rinse foliage with water or apply insecticidal soap if necessary. Its aromatic foliage also helps deter deer and rabbits.

It grows moderately fast, typically reaching 2-3 feet tall and wide within 1-2 seasons under favorable conditions. Pinching back early in the season encourages denser branching.

This perennial can thrive for many years in warm climates with minimal care, often providing dependable blooms and fragrance for 5-10 years or more.

Yes. Mexican Mint Marigold thrives in well-draining soils, including rocky or sandy sites. Overly rich soils can produce leggy growth with fewer flowers.

Light annual pruning and regular deadheading maintain a tidy form and promote additional flowering throughout the growing season.

Absolutely. Its bright flowers, upright habit, and long bloom period make it excellent for borders, cottage gardens, herb gardens, and mass plantings.

Provide full sun, consistent moisture during dry periods, remove spent flowers regularly, and prune lightly in early spring.
