Possumhaw Holly

Ilex decidua

Possumhaw Holly is a notable native small tree cherished for its vibrant winter display. After shedding its leaves in the fall, its bare branches showcase clusters of vivid red berries that last through the winter, attracting birds and adding a burst of seasonal color to the landscape. Growing up to 25 feet tall and 20 feet wide, Possumhaw features an open, rounded shape that makes it an excellent specimen tree. While both male and female plants exist, only the females bear berries, and a male plant nearby is necessary for pollination.
