  • Bright red berries in fall and winter
  • Perfect for containers, entryways, or formal accents
  • Eye-catching topiary with minimal upkeep

Emerald Colonnade Holly Spiral performs best in full sun to partial shade and thrives in well-drained soil. It's heat-tolerant, drought-resistant once established, and holds its form beautifully with a little care. Hardy in USDA zones 7 through 9, this spiral holly offers year-round interest and a sculptural element that elevates both traditional and modern Texas landscapes.

Emerald Colonnade Holly Spiral is a striking topiary that provides year-round elegance with minimal care. Here’s how to keep it thriving:

  • Watering: Water regularly during the first growing season to establish deep roots. Once established, it’s moderately drought-tolerant, requiring only occasional deep watering during prolonged dry periods. Allow the soil to dry slightly between waterings to prevent root rot.
  • Pruning: Light pruning every 6-8 weeks during the growing season maintains the spiral shape and promotes dense foliage. Remove dead or damaged branches in late winter or early spring. Avoid cutting too aggressively to preserve the formal spiral.
  • Fertilizing: Feed in early spring with a slow-release, balanced fertilizer. A light midseason feeding encourages strong growth and lush foliage. Avoid high-nitrogen fertilizers, which may promote leafy growth over berry production.
  • Mulching: Apply a 2-3 inch layer of mulch around the base to retain moisture, regulate soil temperature, and suppress weeds. Keep mulch a few inches from the trunk to prevent rot and pests. Refresh annually.
  • Winter Care: Hardy in most climates, mature plants withstand frost well. Young plants benefit from extra mulch around the roots during extreme cold.

Emerald Colonnade Holly Spiral is resilient but can experience a few minor issues:

  • Leaf Drop: Can occur after transplanting or extreme weather changes. Ensure consistent watering and a healthy mulch layer to support recovery.
  • Scale Insects: Small bumps on stems and leaves that cause yellowing. Treat with horticultural oil in winter or insecticidal soap in the growing season.
  • Spider Mites: Stippling or faded leaves may appear in hot, dry weather. Rinse foliage or apply neem oil to prevent infestations.
  • Sooty Mold: Black residue from sap-feeding insects. Eliminate the pests to allow the mold to disappear naturally.
  • Chlorosis (Yellow Leaves): Often caused by alkaline soil or poor drainage. Apply iron supplements or soil acidifiers if needed.

With proper care, it can thrive for 40-50 years or more. Its evergreen structure and strong root system make it a long-term investment, maintaining its spiral form for decades.

It grows at a moderate pace, typically reaching full spiral height and form in 8-12 years. Regular light pruning ensures dense foliage and preserves its formal structure.

Yes - female plants produce clusters of bright red berries in fall and winter when pollinated by a nearby male holly. These berries attract birds and add seasonal interest.

Absolutely - it thrives in large pots or decorative planters. Ensure good drainage, use high-quality soil, and water more frequently than in-ground plantings during hot months.

Yes - it thrives in full sun and high heat. While occasional deep watering is beneficial during dry spells, it maintains lush foliage under Texas summer conditions.

Yes - mature plants are frost-hardy and retain evergreen foliage. Young plants benefit from a mulch layer around the base for root protection during severe freezes.

Yes - its naturally dense, upright growth makes it perfect for spiral topiary. Light pruning every 6-8 weeks preserves the crisp shape while encouraging healthy, full growth.

Cut back one-third of the oldest stems to the base in late winter. This promotes vigorous growth from the center and helps maintain density and elegance.

Yes - it tolerates reflected heat, pollution, and compacted soils. Its evergreen structure, seasonal berries, and formal spiral shape make it ideal for city streetscapes, entrances, and commercial gardens.

Feed in early spring and optionally midseason with a slow-release, balanced fertilizer. This ensures vibrant foliage and steady growth without over-stimulating leafy growth that could distort the spiral.
