French Cabaret Purple Althea

Hibiscus syriacus 'MINDOUV 5'

The French Cabaret Purple Althea is a total stunner - rich, layered, and bold. Its fully double, carnation-like blooms in a saturated purple hue give your space a regal, dramatic vibe from spring through summer. It grows 8 feet in height and 5 feet in width. This deciduous shrub boasts a strong upright form, making it a striking choice for privacy screens, flowering hedges, or as a charismatic focal point.

  • Deciduous tree
  • Moderate to fast growth rate
  • Stunning double purple blooms with a rich, ruffled look
  • Long bloom time from spring into summer
  • Great for hedging, borders, or as a flowering screen

Plant in full sun and well-drained soil for the best flower show. Light trimming in early spring keeps it tidy and encourages even more blooms. Hardy in USDA zones 5 through 8, it's a standout choice for North Texas beds.

French Cabaret Purple Althea is a durable deciduous flowering shrub that becomes notably easy to manage once established. Here’s everything it needs to grow beautifully:

  • Watering: Provide deep watering during the first growing season to encourage roots to develop well below the surface. Once established, it tolerates moderate drought but benefits from consistent moisture during extended dry periods to support sustained blooming and healthy foliage.
  • Pruning: Prune in late winter or very early spring before new growth begins. Remove weak or inward-growing stems and lightly shape the shrub to maintain airflow and balanced structure, knowing that flowering occurs on current-season growth.
  • Fertilizing: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new buds begin to swell. Avoid excessive nitrogen, which may stimulate lush foliage at the expense of flower production and overall structural balance.
  • Mulching: Maintain a 2-3 inch layer of organic mulch around the root zone to conserve moisture and moderate soil temperature. Keep mulch slightly away from the base of the stems to prevent excess moisture buildup against the bark.
  • Winter Care: Established shrubs are reliably hardy and typically require no additional winter protection. Newly planted specimens benefit from extra root-zone insulation during their first dormant season in colder regions.

French Cabaret Purple Althea is generally resilient, but occasional environmental stress or insect activity may affect performance:

  • Japanese Beetles: Leaves may appear skeletonized during peak summer feeding. Hand removal or traps positioned away from the shrub help reduce ongoing damage.
  • Powdery Mildew: A light white film may form on foliage during humid conditions with limited airflow. Pruning to improve circulation and avoiding overhead watering significantly reduces recurrence.
  • Spider Mites: Fine stippling or pale speckling on leaves may develop during hot, dry weather. Increasing humidity around the plant and rinsing foliage thoroughly helps suppress infestations.
  • Bud Drop: Flower buds may fail to open during inconsistent watering or sudden heat spikes. Maintaining steady soil moisture during stressful periods improves bud retention.
  • Minor Stem Dieback: Isolated branches may not leaf out following winter stress. Pruning back to healthy wood encourages vigorous regrowth.

With proper care, it commonly thrives for 20-30 years in the landscape. Healthy root conditions and consistent structural management support long-term vigor. Mature shrubs remain reliable performers for decades.

Growth typically averages 12-24 inches per year under favorable conditions. A mature branching framework generally develops within 3-5 years. Bloom coverage increases as the plant’s structure becomes more established.

This cultivar stands out for its richly saturated purple blooms with layered, ruffled petals. The fuller flower structure creates a dramatic, velvety texture in the landscape. Its bold coloration adds depth and contrast to summer plantings.

The deep purple tones hold well under bright exposure. While extreme heat may slightly soften the intensity, color stability is generally strong compared to lighter varieties.

Its saturated bloom color pairs effectively with silver foliage, soft pinks, and white perennials. The darker hue provides visual depth in layered plantings. It works especially well when contrasted against lighter backdrops.

Double and semi-double French Cabaret types are often bred for reduced fertility. Seed production is typically limited compared to older single-flowered forms.

The blooms are fuller and more textured than single-flowered purple cultivars. This gives the plant a more luxurious appearance during peak flowering. Structurally, it maintains the same upright, woody shrub habit.

With proper pruning, it forms a moderately dense, upright framework. Selective thinning helps maintain airflow without sacrificing bloom density. Its branching pattern supports a balanced silhouette.

Established plants handle seasonal rainfall well when soil drainage is adequate. Prolonged saturation, however, can stress roots.

Its upright habit allows it to anchor the back or middle of perennial plantings. The strong bloom color provides a focal point among softer-toned companions.
