Blueberry Smoothie Althea Tree Form

Hibiscus syriacus 'DS01BS'

Blueberry Smoothie Althea Tree Form is a distinctive ornamental tree prized for its abundant double blossoms and elegant silhouette. Blooming from midsummer into fall, this variety produces clusters of violet-blue flowers with layered petals, adding depth and charm to outdoor spaces. The blossoms are complemented by lush green foliage, creating an eye-catching display during the warmest months of the year. At maturity, it reaches 8 to 10 feet tall with a spread of 6 to 8 feet, developing into a rounded canopy that works beautifully as a centerpiece in flower beds, entryways, or along borders.

  • Deciduous flowering tree form
  • Rounded canopy with upright growth habit
  • Ruffled double blooms in violet-blue shades
  • Grows 8–10 feet tall and 6-8 feet wide
  • Ideal as a focal point, accent, or border tree

Plant in full sun and well-drained soil. Hardy in USDA zones 5-9, Blueberry Smoothie Althea Tree Form delivers exceptional color and graceful structure to landscapes.

The "Smoothie" series of Althea are double-flowered varieties; because the reproductive parts of the flower are replaced by extra petals (the "double" look), they rarely produce viable seeds which also includes the Peppermint Smoothie, Raspberry Smoothie and Strawberry Smoothie.

Once established, Blueberry Smoothie Althea Tree Form is remarkably easy to care for, making it a favorite for Texas gardens, courtyards, and streetscapes. Here’s what you need to do:

  • Watering: Water deeply and regularly during the first growing season to establish strong roots. Once mature, it tolerates occasional dry periods but thrives with consistent moisture, especially during extended heat. Deep, infrequent watering encourages robust growth and abundant blooms.
  • Pruning: Prune lightly in late winter or early spring to maintain shape, remove dead or crossing branches, and encourage airflow. Avoid heavy pruning, which can reduce blooming for the upcoming season.
  • Fertilizing: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer (10-10-10 or 12-6-6) in early spring before new growth begins. Over-fertilizing can produce lush foliage but fewer flowers.
  • Mulching: Spread a 2-3 inch layer of organic mulch around the base to conserve moisture and regulate soil temperature. Keep mulch a few inches away from the trunk to prevent rot.
  • Spacing: Plant 8-10 feet apart if creating a hedge effect, or 10-12 feet apart for individual specimens to allow full canopy development. Proper spacing improves airflow and reduces disease risk.

Common Issues and How to Take Care of Them

While Blueberry Smoothie Althea Tree Form is incredibly hardy, it’s still susceptible to various pests and diseases. Keep watch for the following:

  • Aphids and spider mites: Small pests that feed on new growth. Rinse leaves with water or apply insecticidal soap. Introduce beneficial insects like ladybugs to keep populations in check naturally.
  • Powdery mildew: White, powdery coating on leaves or buds. Improve airflow and avoid watering directly on foliage. Fungicide may be applied in severe cases.
  • Leaf spot or blight: Brown or black spots on leaves caused by fungal infections. Remove affected leaves, ensure proper spacing, and prune lightly to increase airflow.
  • Root stress: May occur if planted in compacted soil or overwatered. Deep, infrequent watering encourages strong root systems and drought tolerance.
  • Lack of blooms: Usually from over-fertilization with high-nitrogen fertilizer or insufficient pruning. Use a balanced fertilizer and prune lightly to promote flower production.

With proper watering, light pruning, and attention to pests, Blueberry Smoothie Althea produces striking, color-changing blooms from summer into early fall, adding elegance and visual interest to any landscape.
