October Glory Maple

Acer rubrum ‘October Glory’

October Glory Maple saves its grand finale for the end of the season, lighting up the landscape with intense crimson-red foliage long after most trees have faded. It grows 45 feet in and 35 feet in height. In spring and summer, October Glory offers lush, dark green foliage with a glossy finish and neat, rounded form that makes it equally beautiful as a specimen tree or in group plantings.

  • Deciduous tree
  • Moderate to fast growth rate
  • Vibrant, long-lasting fall color - often into November
  • Symmetrical oval shape with minimal trimming needs

Thriving in full sun to partial shade, this variety is especially valued in regions with longer autumns. Plant October Glory Maple for bold beauty, seasonal interest and shade all year round. Hardy in USDA zones 4 through 9, perfect for North Texas beds.

Maintenance

Once established, October Glory Maple delivers year-round beauty with surprisingly little effort. Here’s all it needs to grow beautifully:

  • Watering: Water regularly during the first growing season to promote strong root development. Once mature, it adapts well to normal rainfall but appreciates deep watering during extended droughts, especially in hot climates.
  • Pruning: Prune in late winter or early spring while the tree is dormant to remove dead, crossing, or crowded branches. Avoid heavy pruning once leaves emerge - light shaping is all that’s needed to maintain balance and airflow.
  • Fertilizing: Feed once in early spring with a slow-release, balanced fertilizer to encourage steady growth and vibrant foliage color. Mature trees typically thrive with minimal supplemental feeding.
  • Mulching: Apply a 2-3 inch layer of mulch around the base to retain moisture, protect roots, and regulate soil temperature. Keep mulch a few inches from the trunk to prevent rot and pest issues. Refresh each spring for optimal tree health.
  • Winter care: October Glory Maple is hardy and low-maintenance through winter. Young trees benefit from a protective mulch layer around the root zone. Avoid late-season pruning or fertilizing to prevent tender new growth before frost.

Common Issues and How to Take Care of Them

October Glory Maple is strong and reliable, but a few manageable issues may appear in less-than-ideal conditions:

  • Leaf Scorch: Browning or curling leaf edges during hot, dry weather. Maintain deep watering during extended drought and mulch to conserve moisture.
  • Aphids: Small insects that feed on sap and produce sticky honeydew. Rinse leaves with water or apply insecticidal soap; natural predators like ladybugs help keep populations in check.
  • Verticillium Wilt: A soil-borne fungus that causes wilting or dieback. Prune affected branches and avoid overwatering. Healthy trees often outgrow mild infections.
  • Tar Spot: Circular black spots on leaves late in the season. Cosmetic only - rake and discard fallen leaves in fall to prevent reinfection.
  • Root Compaction: Can occur if planted near heavy foot traffic or driveways. Maintain a wide mulch bed to protect roots and allow oxygen flow.
  • Wind Damage: Young trees can be vulnerable to strong gusts. Stake during the first year, then remove supports once the trunk is stable.

With proper care, it can live 30 to 40 years or more. It’s a long-term investment in beauty and shade, with durable wood and deep roots that keep it strong through generations.

It grows moderately to fast - often adding 1 to 2 feet of height per year. It typically reaches full maturity within 20-25 years but develops a full, dense canopy within its first decade.

Yes - its broad, symmetrical canopy creates excellent shade through summer while allowing soft filtered light beneath. It’s ideal for lawns, patios, and streetscapes.

Yes, deer rarely browse on it. Its smooth bark and tough leaves make it naturally unappealing to wildlife.

Yes, it adapts impressively well to warm Southern climates. With deep roots and proper mulching, it maintains lush green foliage even in extended heat.

Absolutely. October Glory Maple is hardy through harsh winters and recovers easily from frost or snow damage. Its fall color intensifies after cool nights.

Yes, as long as adequate space is provided. Its root system is strong but not aggressively invasive, making it suitable for residential and urban landscapes.

Yes - it’s highly adaptable to pollution, compacted soils, and reflective heat. Its resilience and visual impact make it a favorite for city parks, boulevards, and modern neighborhoods.

Remove deadwood and crossing branches in early spring, then feed with a balanced fertilizer. Within a season or two, new growth will fill in and restore canopy density.

Its extended fall color display and its tolerance for both heat and cold make it one of the most reliable and vibrant red maples for Southern landscapes.
