Celebration Maple

Acer × freemanii ‘Celzam’

Celebration Maple combines the best of both worlds: the structure and vibrant color of the Red Maple with the rapid growth and adaptability of the Silver Maple. It grows 45 feet in height and 35 in width. Its growth habit is narrow and upright, making it a smart choice for street planting or spaces where height is needed without excessive spread. As temperatures cool, Celebration lives up to its name - bursting into rich golden-orange and fiery red foliage that holds longer than many other varieties.

  • Deciduous tree
  • Fast growth rate
  • Upright, uniform form with strong central leader
  • Dazzling fall colors in golden orange and red tones
  • Excellent for new developments or large yards

Plant it in full sun with well-drained soil, and it’ll be a focal point in no time. Hardy in USDA zones 4 to 8, Celebration Maple is ideal for those who want quick results and bold seasonal beauty without sacrificing structure.

Celebration Maple is a low-maintenance tree that thrives with basic care. Here’s how to keep it looking its best:

  • Watering: Water regularly during the first growing season to establish a strong root system. Once mature, it is moderately drought-tolerant, needing only occasional deep watering during extended dry periods. Avoid letting soil stay soggy, as this can stress the tree.
  • Pruning: Light pruning in late winter or early spring removes dead, crossing, or weak branches. Avoid heavy pruning, which can alter its natural form. Minimal maintenance ensures the tree keeps its elegant, upright canopy and vibrant foliage.
  • Fertilizing: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer once in early spring. Mature trees often require little additional feeding, but a light top-dressing encourages healthy leaf color and overall vigor.
  • Mulching: Apply a 2-3 inch layer of organic mulch around the base to retain soil moisture, regulate temperature, and suppress weeds. Keep mulch a few inches from the trunk to prevent rot.
  • Winter Care: Celebration Maple is hardy and tolerant of cold winters. Young trees benefit from a protective mulch layer around the roots during their first few seasons. Established trees rarely need additional winter protection.

Celebration Maple is resilient, but a few manageable problems can occur:

  • Leaf Spot: Fungal or bacterial spots can appear on foliage during wet seasons. Remove affected leaves and ensure good air circulation.
  • Aphids: Small insects may cluster on new growth, causing sticky residue. Rinse leaves with water or apply insecticidal soap if needed.
  • Scale or Mites: Rare infestations can be treated with horticultural oil or neem oil.
  • Environmental Stress: Sudden drought, excessive moisture, or extreme temperatures may cause leaf drop or minor yellowing. Maintain consistent watering and healthy soil conditions to minimize stress.

With proper care, Celebration Maple typically lives 50-70 years. Its hybrid vigor contributes to long-term strength and adaptability. Mature trees often serve as reliable legacy shade trees.

It grows quickly, averaging about 24-36 inches per year. A strong, well-developed canopy usually forms within 15-20 years. Rapid growth is balanced by good structural strength.

Its early spring flowers attract bees and other pollinators. While not showy, they provide an important early-season nectar source. Pollinator activity supports surrounding plant life.

Deer may browse young trees, particularly during establishment. Mature trees are less appealing and usually avoided. Temporary protection helps ensure early success.

It is not suitable for long-term container growing due to its vigorous growth and eventual size. Young trees may be container-grown temporarily at nurseries. Planting in the ground allows proper development.

Division is not recommended for trees with woody trunks. Propagation is done through grafting or controlled nursery methods. This ensures uniform growth and fall color.

It works exceptionally well in mass plantings, rows, and shade corridors. Uniform growth creates a cohesive canopy effect. Group plantings also enhance visual impact in large spaces.

It pairs well with shade-tolerant shrubs, ornamental grasses, and perennial groundcovers. Companion plants benefit from filtered light beneath the canopy. Underplantings soften the tree’s presence.

It performs very well in urban environments. Tolerance to pollution and compacted conditions makes it a popular city tree. Strong branching supports long-term street and park use.

Its fast growth, strong structure, and reliable fall color set it apart. Unlike many fast-growing trees, it maintains good branch strength. Celebration Maple offers quick shade without sacrificing durability.
