Twist of Orange Abelia

Abelia x grandiflora 'gretoo'

An evergreen shrub showcasing gorgeous variegated leaves and fragrant, white flowers. Grows up to 4 feet in height and the same size in width at maturity. It's an ideal addition to borders, containers, and mass plantings. Great as a specimen plant.

Twist of Orange Abelia is a versatile shrub that fits well into any space. It works well in borders, containers, and mass plantings. Its unique foliage attracts interest, making it a notable choice for a specimen plant. It's unique-looking, with variegated foliage in shades of yellow and green. White, aromatic blooms emerge from summer to fall, contributing to the overall visual interest. It reaches up to 4 feet in height and the same size across at maturity.

  • An evergreen shrub
  • Mounded, bushy growth habit
  • Moderate growth rate
  • Variegated foliage and white blooms
  • Great for various landscape uses

Hardy in zones 6-9, this shrub will feel right at home in the North Texas climate. It prospers in full sun, although it tolerates some partial shade. Prefers well-drained soil. Consider applying an all-purpose fertilizer in early spring and early fall to support healthy growth.

Twist of Orange Abelia thrives with ease in Texas landscapes because of its low-maintenance nature. Here’s all it really needs to grow beautifully:

  • Watering: Water deeply and consistently during the first growing season to establish a strong root system. Once established, Twist of Orange is moderately drought-tolerant but performs best with steady moisture during hot summer months to maintain leaf vibrancy. Avoid standing water, as this abelia prefers well-drained soils.
  • Pruning: Minimal pruning is needed. Lightly trim in late winter or early spring to remove winter dieback and encourage fresh, colorful new growth. Avoid heavy shearing, which may reduce flowering and diminish the natural mound shape.
  • Fertilizing: Apply a slow-release, balanced fertilizer in early spring to promote healthy foliage and steady bloom production. A light midseason feeding can help maintain leaf color in lean soils. Excess nitrogen may push green growth at the expense of vibrant orange and red tones.
  • Mulching: Spread a 2-3 inch layer of organic mulch around the base to conserve moisture, moderate soil temperature, and suppress weeds. Keep mulch pulled slightly away from stems to prevent rot and encourage airflow.
  • Winter Care: Twist of Orange is evergreen to semi-evergreen depending on winter temperatures. In colder regions, leaves may bronze or drop slightly, but the shrub rebounds quickly in spring. Delay pruning until after the last frost to avoid stimulating tender growth prematurely.

Twist of Orange Abelia is loved both for its no-fuss nature and hardiness. However, it can still be susceptible to the following common issues:

  • Leaf Burn: Bright sun and high heat can cause minor leaf scorching, especially on the orange margins. Maintain consistent moisture and mulch to protect roots.
  • Spider Mites: Hot, dry conditions may lead to stippling on leaves. Rinse with water or apply horticultural oil as needed.
  • Aphids: Occasionally appear on new growth. Knock off with a strong spray of water or use insecticidal soap.
  • Root Rot: Poor drainage or overwatering can cause decline. Ensure well-drained soil and avoid saturated conditions.
  • Leaf Spot: May occur during prolonged humidity. Remove affected foliage and improve airflow around the plant.

Typically 10-20 years with proper care, offering continuous color and seasonal blooms throughout its lifespan.

It grows at a moderate pace, usually reaching 3-4 feet tall and wide in 3-4 years, forming a neat, rounded mound.

Yes - new growth is bright orange, red, and gold, which gradually matures to green. Cooler weather can intensify reddish tones, creating year-round visual interest.

It blooms intermittently from late spring through fall with delicate white, tubular flowers. While subtle, the blooms add charm and attract occasional pollinators.

Absolutely - its compact habit, vivid foliage, and long-lasting blooms make it ideal for hedges, borders, or grouped displays.

Yes, in most regions. Some leaf bronzing or minor drop may occur in colder areas, but regrowth is swift in spring.

Twist of Orange thrives in well-drained soils and tolerates clay once established. Regular moisture helps maintain bright foliage.

Yes - its compact size, rounded habit, and colorful foliage make it excellent for large containers. Ensure good drainage and consistent watering.

Very little - a light trim in early spring maintains shape and encourages new, colorful growth. Heavy pruning is unnecessary.

Its vibrant orange, red, and gold new growth sets it apart, providing bold, year-round color without high maintenance. Combined with its steady blooming and compact habit, it’s a standout choice for visually striking, low-maintenance landscapes.
