Twist of Lime Abelia

Abelia x grandiflora 'Hopley's'

Twist of Lime Abelia brings a jolt of color to the landscape with bright lime and soft yellow foliage that glows in the sun. Its upright, arching branches form a loose vase shape, maturing to about 4 feet tall and just as wide. The foliage remains colorful throughout the growing season, with new growth showing extra brightness. Twist of Lime is especially effective as a colorful backdrop, accent plant, or container centerpiece. It pairs well with cool blues and purples or can be used to brighten shady corners where lighter tones help open up the space.

  • Evergreen shrub
  • Moderate growth rate
  • Bright lime leaves with creamy yellow edges
  • Upright arching growth habit
  • Great for accent use or decorative containers

Twist of Lime grows best in full sun to part shade and prefers well-drained soil. This semi-evergreen is hardy in USDA zones 6-9, making it well-suited to North Texas landscapes.

Twist of Lime Abelia is loved for its incredibly low-maintenance nature, thriving beautifully in landscapes across Texas. Here’s all it needs to grow:

  • Watering: Water consistently during the first growing season to establish a strong root system. Once established, it handles heat well and becomes modestly drought-tolerant, though even moisture during summer keeps foliage at its brightest. Avoid waterlogged soil, as abelia prefers well-drained conditions.
  • Pruning: Only light pruning is needed. Trim in late winter or early spring to remove any winter dieback and to encourage fresh, colorful growth. Avoid heavy shearing, which can dull the plant’s natural shape and reduce blooms for the season.
  • Fertilizing: Feed with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring. In poorer soils, a light midsummer application can help sustain foliage brightness and bloom vigor. Avoid high-nitrogen fertilizers, which can push too much green growth and diminish the variegation.
  • Mulching: Apply a 2-3 inch mulch layer around the base to maintain soil moisture, reduce weeds, and moderate root temperature. Keep mulch pulled slightly back from the stems to prevent excess moisture against the plant.
  • Winter Care: Twist of Lime is evergreen to semi-evergreen depending on winter temperatures. Colder snaps may cause some leaf drop or bronzing, but the plant rebounds quickly in spring. Delay any shaping until after the final frost to avoid stimulating tender new growth prematurely.

Twist of Lime Abelia is also known for being very tolerant of all kinds of pests and diseases, but it can still be susceptible to some of the most common ones:

  • Leaf Burn: Prolonged sun exposure combined with heat stress may cause mild scorching on the yellow margins. Provide regular moisture and mulch to prevent this.
  • Spider Mites: Drought-stressed plants are more vulnerable. Look for stippling on leaves; rinse with water or use horticultural oil if needed.
  • Aphids: Usually minor but may gather on tender new growth. Wash off with water or use insecticidal soap.
  • Root Rot: Caused by overwatering or heavy, compacted soils. Plant in well-drained areas and avoid standing water.
  • Leaf Spot: Occasional during wet, humid periods. Improve airflow and remove affected foliage.

Typically 10-20 years with proper care, offering reliable color and structure throughout its lifespan.

It grows at a moderate pace and usually reaches maturity within 3-4 years, forming a compact mound about 3-4 feet tall and wide.

Yes - the lime-yellow and green pattern remains consistent year-round, though new growth may show soft pink or cream tones, and winter may bring slight bronzing in colder climates.

It produces clusters of small white tubular flowers from late spring through fall. While not as showy as the foliage, the blooms add a delicate, airy quality.

Yes - the variegation helps illuminate part-sun or dappled shade areas. It performs best with morning sun and afternoon shade in hotter regions.

Very much so. Its tidy, rounded habit and consistent color make it ideal for edging walkways, creating low informal hedges, or anchoring mixed borders.

In most of Texas, yes. In the coldest pockets, it may thin slightly during winter but refoliates quickly.

It thrives in well-drained soils and tolerates clay once established. Consistent moisture (not saturation) keeps foliage bright.

Yes - its compact size and colorful foliage make it well-suited to large pots. Ensure proper drainage and maintain regular watering in summer.

Its exceptionally bright lime-yellow margins, steady year-round color, and dependable habit distinguish it from softer-variegated types. Twist of Lime offers bold color contrast without demanding care, making it a standout in modern landscapes.
