Forever Purple Heuchera

Heuchera × 'Forever Purple'

With its vibrant purple, glossy foliage and delicate white blooms, this hardy perennial is a stunning choice for any setting. It looks amazing in borders, edges, containers, groundcovers, and even as cut flowers. Forever Purple Heuchera, also called Coral Bells, grows up to 1 foot in height and the same size in width at maturity. It reaches maturity approximately 2 years after planting.

  • Semi-evergreen perennial
  • Compact, mounded growth habit
  • Moderate growth rate
  • Vibrant purple foliage
  • Summer-blooming flowers

Hardy in zones 4-9, Forever Purple Heuchera will feel right at home in your North Texas landscape. Thrives in full sun, part shade, and full shade. It's tolerant of various soil types but performs best in well-drained, rich soil. Fertilization is optional and not necessary unless the soil is nutrient-depleted. With a little bit of care, this bold perennial will enrich your space with its striking foliage.

Forever Purple Heuchera is adaptable and very easy care - needing minimal maintenance to grow beautifully. Here’s what you need to know:

  • Watering: Water regularly during the first growing season to establish strong roots. Once mature, Forever Purple prefers moderate, consistent soil moisture and benefits from letting the top inch of soil dry slightly between waterings. Avoid soggy soil.
  • Pruning: Remove tattered or winter-damaged leaves in early spring as fresh foliage emerges. Snip off old flower stalks to keep the plant neat and encourage energy toward foliage. Older clumps can be refreshed by removing the outer ring of tired leaves and coaxing new growth from the center.
  • Fertilizing: Feed lightly in spring using a slow-release, balanced fertilizer or a thin layer of compost. Too much fertilizer can dull the foliage color and encourage floppy growth. A modest nutrient profile keeps leaf tones vibrant and the plant compact.
  • Mulching: Apply a 2-3 inch layer of leaf mold or fine shredded mulch to regulate soil temperature and conserve moisture. Keep mulch slightly away from the crown to prevent rot. Refresh annually to provide consistent root comfort and a clean garden appearance.
  • Winter Care: In colder areas, provide a light winter mulch after the soil freezes to protect shallow roots from frost heave. If the crown lifts during winter, gently reposition it flush with the soil and reapply mulch lightly.

This durable heuchera is reliable in a wide range of climates, though a few occasional issues may appear under very damp or humid conditions:

  • Powdery Mildew: A soft, white film forms on leaves when air circulation is low. Thin plants, improve ventilation, and avoid overhead watering to reduce moisture on leaves.
  • Leaf Spot: Dark or water-soaked patches appear after extended rainfall. Remove affected leaves and water early in the day so foliage dries quickly.
  • Aphids: Clusters of tiny insects gather on stems or fresh growth, causing mild distortion. Wash them off or treat with insecticidal soap.
  • Spider Mites: Speckled, pale foliage and fine webbing develop during hot, dry spells. Rinse leaves regularly and use horticultural oil as needed.
  • Slugs and Snails: Ragged leaf edges or holes mark nighttime feeding. Use grit barriers, traps, or hand-picking to limit damage.
  • Frost Heave: The plant may lift upward during winter thaw cycles, exposing roots. Gently press the crown back into place and apply a light protective mulch.

With good care and periodic rejuvenation, it can thrive for many years, forming a dependable, glowing mound of purple foliage. Regular spring cleanups help maintain its trademark vibrancy and density.

It establishes quickly and typically becomes a full, richly colored mound within a season or two. As it matures, the foliage develops even deeper tones and more pronounced ruffling.

Yes - its summer flowers draw bees and other beneficial insects. While often grown for foliage, the blooms provide a charming seasonal bonus.

Exceptionally well - its compact size and dramatic color make it perfect for pots, urns, and mixed planters. Use a well-draining potting mix and water consistently during hotter months.

Generally yes - deer tend to avoid heuchera foliage due to its taste and texture. It’s a smart option for lightly browsed areas.

Very well - this cultivar was selected for strong performance in warm climates. Its villosa bloodline helps it keep its color rich even in summer.

Yes - dividing every 3-4 years helps maintain vigor and prevents the crown from becoming woody. Spring or early fall is the ideal time to divide.

It performs best in partial shade, though it tolerates deeper shade with slightly softened color tones. A bit of gentle morning light keeps the leaf color most vibrant.

Absolutely - large swaths create a dramatic, jewel-toned effect in woodland borders and shaded beds. It pairs especially well with greens, silvers, and lime foliage.

Beautifully - its bold purple contrasts strikingly with gold hostas, variegated brunnera, ferns, and chartreuse heucheras. It brings depth and drama to any mixed planting.
