Chinese Dogwood

Cornus kousa

Chinese Dogwood brings refined beauty and seasonal color to your landscape. In summer, its branches are topped with clusters of graceful white flowers that contrast perfectly with its rich green leaves. As the seasons shift, the foliage transforms into warm tones of orange and red, adding vibrant fall interest. With its balanced, spreading canopy and layered branching, this tree grows up to 15 feet tall and about 15 feet wide at maturity, making it ideal for small yards, patios, or as a statement specimen. Its elegant form ensures year-round visual appeal and timeless character.

  • A deciduous tree
  • Rounded, spreading growth habit
  • Moderate growth rate
  • White flowers blooming in summer
  • Foliage turns orange and red in fall

Hardy in zones 5–8, Chinese Dogwood will thrive in your North Texas landscape. It prefers partial shade to full sun and grows best in well-drained, slightly acidic soil. With just a bit of care, this beautiful tree offers lasting seasonal color and graceful structure.

Once established, Chinese Dogwood becomes relatively low-maintenance and develops into a durable landscape specimen that requires only moderate seasonal care. Here’s how it thrives:

  • Watering: Water consistently during the first growing season to help establish a strong root system. After establishment, occasional deep watering during extended dry periods helps maintain healthy foliage and steady growth.
  • Pruning: Pruning is generally minimal and typically limited to removing damaged or crossing branches. Light pruning during late winter helps maintain plant health while preserving the tree’s natural form.
  • Fertilizing: Fertilizer is rarely necessary in average garden soils. If growth appears weak, applying a balanced fertilizer in early spring can support stronger seasonal development.
  • Mulching: Maintain a 2-3 inch mulch layer around the root zone to conserve soil moisture and regulate soil temperature. Keep mulch slightly away from the trunk to prevent excess moisture buildup.
  • Winter Care: Established trees tolerate seasonal cold within their recommended growing zones. Young specimens benefit from mulch around the root zone during their first winter to stabilize soil temperatures.

Chinese Dogwood is generally resilient, though occasional pests or environmental stresses may appear. Proper cultural care and routine observation help prevent most issues.

  • Powdery Mildew: A white powdery coating may appear on foliage during humid conditions. Improving airflow and removing affected leaves helps reduce recurrence.
  • Leaf Spot: Small dark spots may occasionally appear on leaves during wet weather. Cleaning up fallen foliage helps prevent the spread of fungal spores.
  • Aphids: Sticky residue on leaves may indicate sap-feeding insects. Spraying foliage with water or applying insecticidal soap typically reduces populations.
  • Drought Stress: Leaves may curl or discolor during extended dry periods. Deep watering during drought conditions helps maintain plant health.
  • Twig Dieback: Small branch tips may occasionally fail to leaf out if stressed. Removing affected twigs during pruning helps keep the canopy healthy.

Chinese Dogwood typically lives 50-80 years when grown in favorable conditions. Mature trees can remain healthy and ornamental for many decades. Proper care helps support long-term vitality.

Growth generally averages about 12-24 inches per year. Noticeable size develops within several growing seasons. Full maturity often occurs within about 15-20 years.

Chinese Dogwood is admired for its elegant flowering display and refined growth habit. The tree produces distinctive star-like bracts that create a striking seasonal feature. Its overall appearance gives landscapes a graceful ornamental presence.

The fruits are technically edible and have a mild, sweet flavor when fully ripe. Some people use them in jams or preserves. However, they are more commonly appreciated as an ornamental feature.

The flowers provide resources for bees and other beneficial insects. Spring-blooming trees help support early pollinator activity. This contributes to ecological diversity in gardens.

The tree continues to contribute visual interest through its foliage and fruit. Autumn foliage often develops warm red or burgundy tones. These seasonal changes extend the tree’s ornamental value.

The fruits may attract birds and other wildlife. Branches can also provide shelter and nesting areas. This helps increase biodiversity within garden spaces.

Older trees gradually develop textured bark that forms small patchwork patterns. This bark becomes more noticeable with age. The effect adds winter interest to the tree.

Rounded flower buds develop on the branches prior to flowering. These buds often become visible before the bloom period begins. They signal the upcoming seasonal display.

Flowering trees like this support pollinators, birds, and beneficial insects. Their presence increases biodiversity within garden environments. This helps create a more balanced landscape ecosystem.
