Alta Magnolia

Magnolia grandiflora 'TMGH'

Alta Magnolia is a stunning tree known for its impressive size and beautiful summer blooms. It reaches up to 40 feet tall and 20 feet wide, offering a strong vertical presence with a broad, rounded canopy. In summer, the tree produces large, fragrant white flowers that create a striking display and fill the air with a delightful scent. The glossy green leaves provide a lush backdrop that enhances the blooms and adds year-round interest. Alta Magnolia is an excellent choice for adding sophistication and a timeless look to any landscape or flower bed.

  • Deciduous tree
  • Broad, rounded growth habit
  • Moderate growth rate
  • Large, fragrant white flowers blooming in summer
  • Ideal for landscapes and flower beds

Hardy in zones 7-9, Alta Magnolia thrives in the North Texas climate. It prefers full sun to partial shade, requiring at least 4-6 hours of direct sunlight daily. Plant it in well-drained, fertile soil to support healthy growth and vibrant flowering.

Alta Magnolia brings classic Southern charm in a space-efficient, low-maintenance package. It needs only the following to grow beautifully:

  • Watering: Water deeply and regularly during the first several years to help establish its strong, anchoring root system. Once mature, Alta Magnolia becomes drought-tolerant but always performs best with steady, even moisture during hot seasons.
  • Pruning: Pruning is minimal, as Alta Magnolia maintains a naturally columnar structure. Remove lower limbs only if a more upright, tree-like form is desired, and prune in late winter to eliminate damaged or crossing branches.
  • Fertilizing: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer or compost in early spring to support healthy foliage and vibrant flowering. Avoid high-nitrogen fertilizers that encourage overly soft or lanky growth. In poor soils, a light feeding may be beneficial.
  • Mulching: Spread a 2-3 inch mulch layer around the base to help retain soil moisture and regulate temperature. Keep mulch several inches away from the trunk to avoid moisture buildup against the bark.
  • Winter Care: Alta Magnolia is hardy within its range and keeps its glossy evergreen foliage year-round. Young trees may benefit from wind protection in exposed sites, but mature specimens handle winter conditions very well.

Alta Magnolia is sturdy and dependable, though humid conditions and dense soils may encourage a few issues:

  • Leaf Spot: Brown or black speckles appear on leaves during humid or rainy periods. Remove affected leaves and improve airflow to reduce fungal spread.
  • Scale Insects: Sticky residue, yellowing leaves, or small bumps along stems indicate scale activity. Treat with horticultural oil and promote plant vigor for long-term control.
  • Sooty Mold: A black, powdery film forms on leaves where pests like scale or aphids are feeding. Treat the underlying pest and gently wash leaves to restore appearance.
  • Chlorosis: Yellowing leaves with green veins suggest nutrient imbalance. Apply chelated iron and amend soil if needed.
  • Root Rot: Wilting, leaf drop, or decline appear in poorly drained soils. Improve drainage and adjust watering practices to protect the root system.

Alta Magnolia can live 60-80 years or more when planted in a good location with proper care. Its long life makes it a dependable evergreen anchor for established landscapes.

It grows at a moderate rate and typically achieves its sleek, columnar shape within 8-12 years. As it matures, the canopy becomes fuller while maintaining its narrow outline.

Yes - its large, creamy flowers emit a sweet, classic magnolia fragrance that drifts beautifully through warm air. The scent adds a romantic, old-fashioned charm to modern landscapes.

Absolutely - its slim profile makes it ideal for tight corridors, courtyards, and property lines. It delivers height and lush greenery without encroaching on walkways.

It handles moderate wind well, thanks to its strong central leader and flexible branches. In very open sites, young trees benefit from temporary staking until they anchor firmly.

Definitely - its glossy leaves, coppery undersides, and clean vertical form add sophistication to dormant gardens. The structure stands strong when surrounding plants have died back.

Hydrangeas, Azaleas, Camellias, Hostas, Gardenias, and ornamental grasses complement its rich evergreen foliage. These companions add softness, seasonal color, and tiered interest beneath its upright form.

Yes - its tidy profile, low maintenance needs, and evergreen presence make it ideal for commercial spaces. It delivers year-round beauty with minimal upkeep.

Young Alta Magnolias transplant well when moved during cooler months with an intact root ball. Once reestablished, they resume strong, upright growth.

Its narrow silhouette, evergreen polish, and large summer flowers combine the beauty of Southern magnolias with the practicality of a columnar form. This blend of elegance and space efficiency makes it truly special.
