The Acoma Crape Myrtle tree is as hardy as it is beautiful. Plant it in a sunny place and enjoy the brilliant white flowers during the late Spring and Summer season. In the Fall, enjoy stunning yellow-red foliage and peeling bark. This flowering tree can easily fit into small flower beds or courtyards, giving you a beautiful border or centerpiece.
When it comes to Acoma’s care, here are the elements you should keep in mind:
- Watering regularly during the first year to help your tree establish. Once mature, this variety is relatively drought-tolerant, but will still need watering during long dry spells or extreme heat.
- Pruning in late winter or early spring to shape the tree and remove dead or crossing branches to encourage airflow and a compact form.
- Fertilizing by applying a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring, but be careful not to overdo it.
Mulching by adding a 2-3 inch thick layer around the base to retain moisture, but keep it 6 inches away from the trunk itself.
Common Issues and How to Take Care of Them
Even though Acoma crape myrtle is known to be generally resistant, they’re not 100% pest- and disease-proof. Things these trees might struggle with the most include:
- Powdery mildew - White powdery coating on leaves and buds that reduces hardiness and can cause leaves to drop prematurely.
- Aphids - Small insects that feed on plant sap and produce honeydew that attracts sooty mold (black and grimy mold that weakens the tree).
- Scale - Similar to aphids, white or gray bumps on the bark that feed on the plant and also lead to honeydew and sooty mold.
Managing pests and diseases mostly revolves around good maintenance practices and:
- Pest control that includes treating with insecticidal soap or horticultural oil.
- Proper spacing, allowing the tree to spread naturally and not be overcrowded.
Avoiding overhead watering for lesser chances of powdery mildew and allowing water to reach the roots.
Select three to five healthy main trunks and remove suckers from the base and shoots that are growing randomly throughout. Cut these as flush to the branch or trunk as possible. Also prune dead flowers to encourage new blooms throughout the season.
With its moderate growth rate, around 5 to 7 years.
Their mature size. Natchez crape myrtle can reach 25-30 feet in height and 15-20 feet in width. Acoma can reach 6-8 feet in height and 5-7 feet in width.

Late fall or early spring to ease your Acoma into smooth root establishment. Planting in summer is also possible, but only with ample watering.

However, as a general guideline, aim for 10 gallons daily when temperatures exceed 95°F. For temperatures below 95°F, apply 20 gallons per watering, adjusting the frequency based on the specific temperature.
While they thrive in full sun and tolerate heat at maturity, young and freshly planted Acomas can suffer scorch if not provided proper watering and mulching.
If you don't prune your Acoma crape myrtle, you're: sacrificing its shape, reducing canopy airflow (resulting in more disease risk), getting weaker blooms, more suckers and random shoots that will result in floppiness over time.
Three to five main trunks is ideal, giving it a great frame and great aeration. While they're young, you can decide which trunks to prune and which to keep.
You can try propagation by cuttings for your favorite Acoma, but keep in mind that not all cuttings will take - especially since this hybrid has a moderate success rate for this kind of transplantation. They require careful selection, preparation, and a lot of patience.
