The Wax Leaf Ligustrum brings vibrant greenery and seasonal charm to any landscape, featuring dense, glossy dark green foliage and a graceful shape. This evergreen shrub can grow up to 15 feet in both height and width, creating a full, rounded form that’s ideal for hedges, privacy screens, or as an eye-catching focal point in flower beds. Its thick foliage delivers consistent structure and color throughout the year, making it a dependable and appealing choice for a wide range of landscape designs.

  • An evergreen shrub
  • Dense, rounded growth habit
  • Moderate growth rate
  • Fragrant white flowers blooming in spring
  • Ideal for hedges, screens, and flower beds

Hardy in USDA zones 8-11, the Wax Leaf Ligustrum grows beautifully in the North Texas climate. It performs best in full sun to partial shade, needing a minimum of 4-6 hours of direct sunlight each day. For optimal growth and to keep its foliage lush and glossy year-round, plant it in well-drained soil.

Wax Leaf Ligustrum is a low-maintenance Texas favorite, thriving in landscapes across the state with ease. Here’s all it needs to grow beautifully:

  • Watering: Water regularly during the first growing season to help establish a stable root system. After establishment, occasional deep watering during extended dry periods helps maintain healthy growth.
  • Pruning: Pruning is usually minimal and limited to removing damaged or crowded branches. Light pruning after the flowering period helps maintain balanced growth and encourages dense branching.
  • Fertilizing: Fertilizer is rarely necessary in average soils. If growth appears weak, applying a balanced fertilizer in early spring can encourage stronger seasonal development.
  • Mulching: Maintain a 2-3 inch mulch layer around the root zone to conserve soil moisture and moderate soil temperature. Keep mulch slightly away from the base of the plant to prevent excess moisture buildup.
  • Winter Care: Established plants tolerate seasonal cold within their recommended growing zones without special protection. Young plants benefit from mulch around the root zone during their first winters to help stabilize soil temperatures.

Wax Leaf Ligustrum is generally durable, though occasional pests or environmental stress may occur. Routine observation and proper care help prevent most problems.

  • Scale Insects: Small bumps may appear on stems and leaves as scale insects feed on plant sap. Horticultural oil applications help reduce infestations.
  • Aphids: Sticky residue on leaves may indicate sap-feeding insects. Spraying foliage with water or applying insecticidal soap usually controls populations.
  • Leaf Spot: Dark spots may occasionally develop on foliage during humid weather. Removing affected leaves helps limit fungal spread.
  • Root Stress from Poor Drainage: Excessively wet soil may weaken the root system. Ensuring good drainage helps maintain plant health.
  • Spider Mites: Fine speckling on leaves may occur during hot, dry conditions. Periodic rinsing of foliage with water helps reduce mite populations.

Wax Leaf Ligustrum can live for several decades when grown in suitable conditions. Mature plants often remain healthy for 30-50 years. Proper care helps support long-term vitality.

Growth generally averages about 12-24 inches per year. The plant develops its structure gradually during the first several years. Full maturity often occurs within about 8-12 years.

This plant is admired for its dense evergreen structure and dependable growth. The foliage maintains a clean appearance throughout the year. Its durability makes it a reliable ornamental shrub.

Small clusters of white flowers appear during the warm season. These blooms are lightly fragrant and develop near the tips of the branches. The flowering period adds seasonal interest.

After flowering, small dark berries may develop. These fruits typically appear later in the growing season. They can remain on the plant for an extended time.

The flowers provide nectar for bees and other beneficial insects. Blooming shrubs help support pollinator activity during the growing season. This contributes to biodiversity in garden environments.

Members of the Ligustrum genus are known for their adaptability. They tolerate a variety of soil conditions once established. This resilience contributes to their popularity in gardens.

The plant gradually forms closely spaced branches as it matures. This growth habit creates a full and balanced appearance. Mature specimens often appear compact and structured.

Older plants may gradually develop thicker stems or small trunks. This structural development becomes more visible with age. Mature specimens can take on a tree-like character.

The evergreen foliage maintains its deep green color during colder months. This helps the plant remain noticeable when many other plants are dormant. The consistent structure provides year-round presence.
