Walter’s Viburnum ‘Select’ is a standout deciduous shrub that combines bold form with seasonal beauty. Once established, Walters Viburnum Select is exceptionally dependable and requires very little intervention to maintain its polished appearance. Here’s all it needs to thrive:

• Watering: Provide consistent moisture during the first growing season to establish a strong, fibrous root system. After establishment, Select shows excellent drought tolerance and generally requires supplemental watering only during prolonged dry periods. Deep watering encourages stronger root anchorage and improved long-term performance.
• Pruning: Prune in late winter or immediately after flowering to shape and remove crossing or crowded branches. This cultivar naturally maintains a tighter, more upright form, so heavy pruning is rarely needed. When trained as a small tree, selective structural pruning enhances its refined canopy.
• Fertilizing: Walter’s Viburnum Select performs well in average soils without routine fertilization. If growth appears slow, a light application of balanced fertilizer in early spring supports foliage density and bloom production. Avoid overfeeding, as excessive nutrients can promote overly rapid, soft growth.
• Mulching: Apply a 2-3 inch mulch layer around the base to help regulate soil moisture and temperature. Mulch also improves soil structure over time and protects shallow feeder roots. Keep mulch slightly away from the trunk to prevent bark moisture issues.
• Winter Care: This cultivar is cold-hardy within its growing zones and typically requires no winter protection once established. In marginally colder areas, mulch helps insulate the root zone. 

Walter’s Viburnum Select is resilient and well-adapted, though a few manageable issues may occasionally arise.

• Leaf Spot: Dark spotting may appear during extended periods of wet weather. Removing affected foliage and improving air circulation helps reduce recurrence.
• Scale Insects: Small, raised bumps may attach to stems or leaves, leading to yellowing or reduced vigor. Dormant-season horticultural oil applications effectively manage infestations.
• Root Stress from Poor Drainage: Yellowing leaves and slowed growth can occur if soil remains waterlogged. Improving drainage and adjusting watering frequency restores plant health.
• Sooty Mold: Black residue may develop on leaves due to honeydew produced by insects such as aphids or scale. Controlling the insect population resolves the issue.
• Storm or Wind Breakage: Young plants in exposed areas may experience minor branch breakage. Early structural pruning encourages stronger branch angles and improved durability.
