Twist of Lemon Abelia

Abelia x grandiflora 'Gretol'

Twist of Lemon Abelia is a striking semi-evergreen shrub prized for its bright, variegated foliage and easy-care nature. The golden-yellow and lime-green leaves create a luminous display that stands out beautifully in borders and foundation beds. From summer through fall, clusters of delicate white, lightly fragrant flowers appear, adding a soft contrast to the vibrant foliage. Reaching 3 to 4 feet tall and 5 to 6 feet wide at maturity, Twist of Lemon Abelia maintains a tidy, rounded habit that works well in both formal and natural landscape designs.

  • Semi-evergreen flowering shrub
  • Moderate growth rate
  • Variegated golden-yellow and green foliage
  • Small white flowers in summer
  • Excellent for borders, accents, or foundation plantings

Thriving in full sun to partial shade, Twist of Lemon Abelia performs best in well-drained soil. Hardy in USDA zones 6 through 9, it’s heat-tolerant, drought-resistant once established, and an ideal choice for adding bright, low-maintenance color to Texas landscapes.

Twist of Lemon Abelia is a bright, compact evergreen shrub valued for its exceptionally easy-care nature. It performs reliably in a wide range of landscapes with minimal upkeep once established. Here’s all it needs:

  • Watering: Water regularly during the first growing season to establish a strong, widespread root system. Once mature, Twist of Lemon Abelia is moderately drought-tolerant but looks best with occasional deep watering during prolonged heat or dry spells. Avoid consistently saturated soil, which can stress roots.
  • Pruning: Very little pruning is required thanks to its naturally tidy, mounded form. Light pruning in late winter or early spring can refresh shape and encourage dense growth. You may also lightly trim after flowering to maintain a compact appearance. Avoid heavy or frequent shearing, which can reduce flowering.
  • Fertilizing: Abelia typically needs little supplemental feeding. If growth appears slow or foliage color is dull, apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring. Excess fertilizer - especially high nitrogen - can encourage leafy growth at the expense of flowers.
  • Mulching: Apply a 2-3 inch layer of mulch around the root zone to conserve moisture, suppress weeds, and moderate soil temperature. Keep mulch a few inches away from the base of the plant to prevent moisture-related issues. Refresh annually for best results.
  • Winter Care: Twist of Lemon Abelia is cold-hardy in its recommended zones and usually needs no winter protection once established. In colder regions, some foliage bronzing or minor dieback may occur, but plants rebound quickly in spring. Mulching helps protect roots during temperature fluctuations.

Twist of Lemon Abelia is highly dependable, though a few minor issues may appear under stress:

  • Leaf Drop: Temporary leaf drop may occur during extreme cold or drought. Maintain consistent moisture and apply mulch to reduce stress.
  • Winter Bronzing: Foliage may take on bronze or reddish tones in winter, especially in cold climates. This is normal and resolves with spring growth.
  • Aphids: Sticky residue or distorted new growth can indicate aphids. Rinse foliage with water or use insecticidal soap if infestations persist.
  • Root Stress: Poor drainage or overly compacted soil may cause slowed growth or yellowing leaves. Improve soil structure and adjust watering practices to restore vigor.

Twist of Lemon Abelia forms a naturally tidy, mounded shrub with a full, dense appearance.

It grows at a moderate rate, filling out nicely within 2-3 years while maintaining a controlled, manageable size.

Yes. It produces small, fragrant pink to white tubular flowers from late spring through summer, often continuing into early fall. The blooms attract bees and butterflies.

The foliage emerges bright golden-yellow with green centers and maintains strong color through the growing season. In cooler weather, leaves may deepen to chartreuse or develop warm bronze tones.

It is evergreen to semi-evergreen depending on climate. In mild regions, it retains foliage year-round; in colder areas, it may lose some leaves during winter and flush again in spring.

Yes. Its compact size and tidy habit make it well-suited for containers, patios, and entryways. Ensure excellent drainage and consistent watering in pots.

Yes. Once established, it withstands periods of heat and moderate drought, though occasional deep watering during extended dry spells helps maintain vibrant foliage.

It is considered moderately deer-resistant. While not deer-proof, it is typically not a preferred food source.

Absolutely. Its dense growth, consistent size, and colorful foliage make it ideal for low hedges, foundation plantings, and mixed borders.

Its vivid lemon-yellow variegation, compact habit, and long bloom period set it apart. It delivers bright color, texture, and flowers in a shrub that requires very little maintenance, making it an excellent choice for both modern and traditional landscapes.
