Take proper care of your Spintop Red Blanket Flower and you will enjoy its beauty throughout the full blooming period. Hardy in zones 3-9, it will be a great addition for your North Texas landscape. It thrives in full sun, so make sure it receives at least 6-8 hours of sunlight each day, and plant it in well drained soil. Deadheading will encourage new, healthy blooms.

Spintop Red Blanket Flower has exceptional drought tolerance and remarkable adaptability - all in a tidy, low-maintenance mound. Here’s all it needs to grow beautifully:

  •  Watering: Water regularly during the first growing season to establish strong roots. Once mature, Spintop Red thrives in dry to moderate conditions, needing only occasional deep watering during extended drought. Avoid overwatering and soggy soil to prevent crown rot.
  •  Pruning: Deadhead faded blooms frequently to encourage continual flowering and maintain a clean appearance. After the growing season, trim stems down to 3-4 inches above the base. Removing spent or woody stems each year ensures fresh, vigorous regrowth.
  •  Fertilizing: Feed lightly in spring with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer or compost. Overfertilizing encourages soft growth and reduces flowering, so moderation is key.
  •  Mulching: Apply a 1-2 inch layer of gravel or light mulch around the base to conserve moisture and deter weeds. Keep mulch slightly away from the crown to promote airflow and prevent rot. Refresh each spring for a neat, polished look.
  •  Winter Care: Spintop Red Blanket Flower is hardy and resilient. In cold regions, apply a thin winter mulch after the soil freezes to protect the root zone. Remove mulch early in spring to allow new growth to emerge freely.

Spintop Red Blanket Flower is notably low-maintenance and pest-resistant, though occasional problems may arise under stress or poor conditions:

  •  Powdery Mildew: A white, powdery coating on leaves during humid weather. Improve airflow, avoid overhead watering, and prune back affected stems.
  •  Rust: Appears as orange pustules on the undersides of leaves. Remove infected foliage and apply copper-based fungicide if needed.
  •  Aphids: Small insects that feed on tender shoots. Rinse off with a strong jet of water or apply insecticidal soap to manage infestations.
  •  Spider Mites: Tiny pests that appear in hot, dry weather, leaving stippled foliage. Rinse plants occasionally and use horticultural oil if needed.
  •  Botrytis Blight: Gray mold appearing during long wet spells. Deadhead regularly and ensure plants have adequate air circulation.
  •  Slugs and Snails: Occasionally feed on young foliage in wet conditions. Use organic traps or barriers for protection.

Typically, it thrives for 3-5 years, but regular division every few seasons keeps it vigorous and blooming heavily. Its longevity increases when grown in well-draining soil with full sun.

It grows rapidly, reaching full size and blooming in its first year. Within two growing seasons, it forms a dense, compact mound covered in flowers.
