Hot Pink Salvia Greggii

Salvia greggii ‘Hot Pink’

Hot Pink Salvia greggii delivers hot pink blooms from spring through fall, standing out against its dark green, aromatic foliage. Its growth at maturity is up to 3 feet in height and width. Its compact, rounded habit makes it ideal for pathways, mixed perennial beds, or container use. Its vivid color stands out beautifully against gravel, mulch, or silvery foliage, making it easy to design with in water-wise beds. Flowering is steady throughout the warm months and highly attractive to butterflies and hummingbirds. This bushy perennial is wonderfully durable, and boasts a lovely, mild scent.

  • A herbaceous perennial
  • Compact, mounded growth habit
  • Fast growth rate
  • Long bloom season
  • Aromatic foliage

This variety thrives in full sun and prefers well-drained soil. Hardy in USDA zones 7–9, it performs well throughout Texas, including North Texas. Trim lightly in spring to refresh the shape, and remove spent blooms if desired to extend flowering.

Hot Pink Salvia Greggii thrives in Texas landscapes, xeriscapes, borders, and pollinator gardens, providing color from spring through fall. Here’s how to care for it:

  • Watering: Water deeply during the first few weeks after planting to establish a strong root system. Once established, Hot Pink Salvia Greggii is drought-tolerant and prefers well-drained soil. Occasional supplemental watering during hot, dry periods encourages continuous flowering. Avoid waterlogged soil, which can lead to root problems.
  • Pruning: Deadhead spent blooms regularly to encourage repeat flowering. In late winter or early spring, prune the plant back to 6-10 inches to rejuvenate growth and maintain a compact, bushy shape. Light pruning during the growing season helps control size and encourages fuller growth.
  • Fertilizing: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring to support vigorous growth and abundant flowers. Avoid excessive nitrogen, which can encourage leafy growth at the expense of blooms. Adding compost or organic matter improves soil structure and long-term vitality.
  • Mulching: Apply a 2-inch mulch layer around the base to conserve moisture, suppress weeds, and regulate soil temperature. Keep mulch slightly away from the crown to prevent rot. Refresh annually for best results.
  • Winter Care: Hot Pink Salvia Greggii is hardy in USDA zones 7-10. In colder climates, cut back after the first frost and protect roots with extra mulch. In warmer areas, it may remain evergreen and continue flowering for much of the year.

Hot Pink Salvia Greggii is generally hardy, though minor issues may occur:

  • Powdery Mildew: White powdery spots on leaves may develop in humid, shaded areas. Improve airflow and avoid overhead watering to reduce occurrence.
  • Aphids: Sticky or curling foliage signals aphid activity. Rinse with water or use insecticidal soap if needed.
  • Root Rot: Wilting or yellowing foliage may indicate overly wet soil. Ensure proper drainage and avoid overwatering.
  • Leaf Scorch: Browning leaf edges can appear during intense heat or drought. Mulch and consistent watering help prevent stress.
  • Leggy Growth: Plants that become sparse can be rejuvenated by pruning older stems and spent flowers to encourage fuller growth.

It is a perennial that typically lives 3-6 years. With proper pruning and care, it can bloom reliably for multiple seasons.

It grows moderately, reaching 18-24 inches tall in its first year. Blooming begins in late spring and can continue through fall with proper deadheading and care.
