Sea Green Juniper

Juniperus chinensis 'Sea Green'

Sea Green Juniper brings year-round structure and a refined, graceful appearance to your landscape. Its arching branches form a soft fountain shape, densely cloaked in feathery, deep green foliage that keeps its color beautifully through all seasons. In addition to its lush texture, it produces attractive bluish berries, adding seasonal interest and subtle color contrast. Growing to about 4 feet in height with a spread of 6 feet, it makes an excellent option for borders, mass plantings, slopes, or as an easy-care accent. Its naturally elegant shape means it looks polished with very little maintenance.

  • Evergreen shrub
  • Arching, fountain-like growth habit
  • Moderate growth rate
  • Rich green foliage with ornamental berries
  • Great for borders, slopes, and foundation plantings

Hardy in zones 4–9, Sea Green Juniper thrives in the North Texas climate. Prefers full sun and well-drained soil. Durable and adaptable, it delivers texture and evergreen color to your landscape all year long.

Sea Green Juniper remains one of the most reliable low-maintenance evergreens for modern and traditional garden styles alike. Here’s all it needs:

  • Watering: Provide deep, consistent watering during the first growing season to help establish a resilient root system. Once mature, Sea Green Juniper becomes highly drought-tolerant and typically needs supplemental water only during prolonged dry periods.
  • Pruning: Pruning needs are minimal thanks to its naturally arching shape. Light trimming can be done in late winter to remove stray or damaged branches and maintain a clean outline. Avoid shearing into old wood.
  • Fertilizing: Sea Green Juniper thrives in average soils without heavy feeding. If growth is slow or foliage appears pale, apply a light, balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring. Overfertilizing can lead to overly soft growth that loses structure.
  • Mulching: Apply a 2-3 inch mulch layer to conserve moisture, suppress weeds, and keep soil temperatures more stable. Keep mulch a few inches away from the trunk to avoid moisture buildup and potential bark issues.
  • Winter Care: Sea Green Juniper is fully hardy and requires no special winter protection. In areas with heavy snow, gently brush off accumulated snow to prevent branch bending.

Sea Green Juniper is resilient, though a few manageable issues may appear in overly humid, shaded, or poorly drained sites:

  • Phomopsis Tip Blight: New shoot tips turn brown and die back, especially in humid spring weather. Prune out affected tips and improve airflow to reduce fungal pressure.
  • Spider Mites: Fine stippling and a dusty appearance develop during hot, dry spells. Rinse foliage and use horticultural oil if needed to restore vigor.
  • Bagworms: Silky bags covered in plant debris appear on branches and may cause defoliation. Remove bags by hand or use appropriate treatments early in the season.
  • Root Rot: Decline and browning begin at the base when soil remains excessively wet. Improve drainage and reduce watering to protect the root system.
  • Cedar-Apple Rust: Orange, gelatinous galls may form in spring. Removing affected galls and avoiding planting near susceptible apple varieties helps reduce recurrence.

A Sea Green Juniper can live 20-30 years or more when grown in well-drained soil and allowed to establish properly. Its evergreen presence adds long-term structure and color to the landscape.

It grows at a moderate pace and usually reaches its mature form in about 5-7 years. The fountain-like silhouette becomes more pronounced and graceful as the shrub fills out.

Sea Green Juniper is generally unappealing to deer, who typically avoid its aromatic, textured foliage. This makes it a dependable evergreen in high-browse landscapes.

It can be grown in large containers when young, especially for patios or elevated garden spaces. Over time, planting in the ground allows its arching form to develop more naturally.

It handles heat exceptionally well and maintains foliage color even in intense summer conditions. Consistent airflow and well-drained soil help it remain healthy during prolonged heat.

Junipers cannot be divided because they do not form clumping root systems. Propagation is done through cuttings rather than division.

Yes - it performs beautifully in mass plantings, creating soft, cohesive sweeps of evergreen color. Its arching form adds movement and texture when repeated across a landscape.

Perennials like Lavender, Salvia, Coreopsis, Sedum, ornamental grasses, and other drought-tolerant shrubs complement its evergreen texture. These combinations create layered interest throughout the year.

Young plants transplant well when moved with an intact root ball during cooler seasons. Once established, they settle quickly and continue growing reliably.

Its elegant, fountain-like arching form distinguishes it from more rigid, upright types. The combination of graceful movement, deep evergreen color, and low maintenance makes it a landscape favorite.
