Leyland Cypress Murray

Cupressocyparis leylandii 'Murray'

Leyland Cypress ‘Murray’ is a robust evergreen conifer known for its fast growth and exceptional resilience. With a naturally pyramidal habit and dense green foliage, this variety makes an excellent option for privacy screens and property borders. This tree grows 25 feet in height and 20 feet in width Compared to the standard Leyland, ‘Murray’ is more tolerant of heat and cold, making it a more reliable option in a variety of landscapes.

  • Evergreen conifer
  • Fast-growing with pyramidal growth habit
  • Dense green foliage
  • More adaptable than traditional Leyland varieties
  • Very hardy

This variety thrives in full sun and prefers well-drained soil but adapts well to clay and loamy types. Once established, it’s drought-tolerant. Hardy in USDA zones 6 through 10, the ‘Murray’ Leyland Cypress is a dependable solution for creating living fences or elegant vertical accents.

Once established, Leyland Cypress Murray becomes a relatively low-maintenance tree that develops into a tall, resilient landscape specimen requiring only moderate seasonal attention. This is how it thrives:

  • Watering: Water regularly during the first growing season to help establish a strong root system. After establishment, the tree typically requires only occasional deep watering during extended dry periods to maintain healthy growth.
  • Pruning: Pruning is usually limited to maintaining size or removing damaged branches. Light trimming during late winter or early spring helps keep the tree healthy while preserving its natural form.
  • Fertilizing: Fertilizer is generally unnecessary in average soils. If additional growth is desired, a balanced fertilizer applied in early spring can encourage steady development.
  • Mulching: Maintain a 2-3 inch layer of mulch around the root zone to help conserve moisture and regulate soil temperatures. Keep mulch slightly away from the trunk to prevent excess moisture buildup.
  • Winter Care: Established trees typically tolerate seasonal cold without special protection. Young trees benefit from mulch around the root zone during their first winter to stabilize soil temperatures.

Leyland Cypress Murray is generally durable, though a few pests or environmental stresses may occasionally occur:

  • Seiridium Canker: Sunken areas on branches or trunk may indicate fungal infection. Pruning infected branches and improving plant spacing helps reduce spread.
  • Bagworms: Small cone-shaped bags may appear on branches as caterpillars feed on foliage. Hand removal or targeted insect treatments help control infestations.
  • Spider Mites: Foliage may appear dull or speckled during hot, dry conditions. Spraying foliage with water periodically helps reduce mite populations.
  • Root Stress from Poor Drainage: Waterlogged soils may weaken the root system over time. Improving drainage helps maintain healthy roots.
  • Wind Damage: Tall trees may occasionally lose small branches during storms. Removing damaged limbs helps maintain overall plant health.

Leyland Cypress Murray typically lives around 30-50 years in landscape conditions. Mature trees can remain attractive for decades with proper care. Good planting conditions help support longevity.

This tree is known for its rapid growth, often adding 2-3 feet per year under favorable conditions. Noticeable height develops within just a few years. Full maturity may take 15-20 years.
