With proper establishment, Japanese Cedar Gyokruyu becomes a remarkably low-maintenance, dependable evergreen. Here’s all it needs:

• Watering: Water deeply and consistently during the first 1-2 years to establish a strong root system capable of handling heat and seasonal dryness. Once mature, ‘Gyokuryu’ becomes moderately drought-tolerant and typically needs supplemental water only during prolonged dry spells.
• Pruning: Pruning needs are minimal thanks to its naturally tidy, symmetrical form. If shaping or refinement is desired, prune lightly in late winter to remove damaged or wayward branches, maintaining its clean, polished silhouette without altering its natural character.
• Fertilizing: This cultivar thrives in moderately fertile soil and usually requires little fertilizer after establishment. If foliage appears pale or growth slows, apply a light dose of slow-release, balanced fertilizer in early spring to support healthy new growth without promoting overly soft or lanky foliage.
