Christmas Jewel Holly

Ilex x ‘HL10-90’

Christmas Jewel Holly is an evergreen shrub known for its upright form and rich spiny foliage. One of its standout features is its heavy display of vivid red berries in colder months - even without a male pollinator. Growing up to 8 feet tall and 6 feet wide, this holly makes a lovely choice for borders or as a festive focal point in the landscape. Its symmetrical shape and vibrant color add year-round interest.

  • Evergreen shrub
  • Slow to moderate growth rate
  • Dark green, spiny foliage
  • Bright red berries appear without pollination
  • Great for borders or decorative plantings

Christmas Jewel Holly loves full sun to partial shade and prefers well-drained soil. It's drought-tolerant once established and adaptable to various Texas soil types. Hardy in USDA zones 6 through 9, it brings beauty and structure to landscapes with minimal care.

Christmas Jewel Holly is a low-maintenance tree-like shrub that’s loved across Texas landscapes for its easy going nature. Here’s everything it needs to grow beautifully:

  • Watering: Water deeply and regularly during the first 1-2 years to encourage a strong root system capable of supporting its upright structure and berry production. Once established, Christmas Jewel becomes moderately drought-tolerant and typically needs supplemental water only during extended dry periods; avoid shallow watering that encourages weak surface roots.
  • Pruning: Pruning needs are minimal thanks to its naturally tidy, upright habit. If shaping or refinement is desired, prune lightly in late winter to remove damaged, crossing, or unruly branches while preserving its characteristic pyramidal outline.
  • Fertilizing: This holly thrives in moderately fertile soils and generally needs only light fertilization once established. If growth slows or foliage appears pale, apply a slow-release, balanced fertilizer in early spring to promote lush foliage and heavy berry set.
  • Mulching: Apply a 2-3 inch mulch layer around the base to conserve moisture, regulate soil temperature, and suppress weeds. Keep mulch several inches away from the trunk to prevent moisture buildup against the bark and refresh annually for optimal root health.
  • Winter Care: Christmas Jewel is impressively cold-hardy and maintains vibrant foliage even in chilly winters. In unusually harsh conditions, slight leaf bronzing may occur, but plants rebound quickly with spring growth.

Christmas Jewel Holly is notably resilient, though a few minor issues can arise during periods of stress, excessive humidity, or poor drainage:

  • Leaf Spot: Small brown or purplish lesions appear after prolonged wet weather. Remove affected leaves and encourage airflow to reduce fungal pressure.
  • Scale Insects: Waxy bumps on stems or leaves cause yellowing and thinning. Treat with horticultural oil or insecticidal soap to suppress populations.
  • Spider Mites: Fine stippling, dull foliage, and subtle webbing appear during hot, dry spells. Rinse foliage or apply horticultural oil to restore healthy color.
  • Root Rot: Wilting and yellowing occur in poorly drained soils that remain excessively wet. Improve drainage and adjust watering frequency to protect root health.
  • Chlorosis: Yellow leaves with green veins indicate nutrient imbalance in alkaline soils. Apply chelated iron or soil amendments to correct the deficiency.

These hollies typically live 30-40 years with proper care, maintaining their elegant structure and berry production throughout their lifespan. Their longevity makes them exceptional long-term focal points in gardens and entryways.

It grows at a moderate rate of 8-12 inches per year, forming its characteristic pyramidal shape within 5-8 years. This steady pace ensures dependable structure without overwhelming surrounding plantings.

Its tough, glossy leaves are generally not favored by deer, making browsing infrequent. In high-pressure areas, young shrubs may still benefit from temporary protection.

It performs well in large, deep containers thanks to its narrow, upright form. For long-term growth and berry production, planting in the ground is ideal.

It cannot be divided, as it grows from a single woody trunk and root system. Propagation requires cuttings or professionally grown nursery stock.

Absolutely - its consistent form and bright berries create beautiful evergreen corridors and seasonal displays. Repeated plantings give a clean, elegant, and festive effect year-round.

Companions like Abelia, Loropetalum, Nandina, Liriope, and flowering perennials provide contrasting texture and seasonal color. Its upright form makes it an excellent anchor for layered beds.

Yes - it tolerates pollution, compacted soils, and reflected heat better than many ornamental shrubs. Its evergreen presence and narrow form make it ideal for city gardens and commercial spaces.

Young plants transplant well when moved during cool seasons with an intact root ball. With proper watering, they reestablish quickly and resume normal growth.

Its combination of glossy evergreen foliage, abundant bright red berries, narrow upright form, and low-maintenance requirements sets it apart. Christmas Jewel brings year-round elegance and seasonal color with very little effort.
