Monarch Holly

Ilex x 'EN-6'

Monarch Holly is a robust evergreen tree known for its broad, dense canopy and gorgeous glossy leaves. Its large, dark green foliage provides lush year-round coverage, while vibrant red berries appear in fall and winter. With a mature size ranging from 14 feet tall and spreading 7 feet wide, Monarch Holly is a wonderful choice for shade or as a dramatic specimen in larger yards and parks.

  • Evergreen tree
  • Moderate to fast growth rate with broad, dense habit
  • Abundant red berries in fall and winter
  • Ideal for shade, screens or specimen planting
  • Hardy and adaptable

Monarch Holly thrives in full sun, although it fares well in partial shade, too. Plant it in well-drained, slightly acidic soil. It is heat-tolerant and drought-resistant once established, making it well-suited for Texas landscapes and urban settings. Hardy in USDA zones 6 through 9, Monarch Holly offers seasonal interest and year-round greenery with minimal care.

Monarch Holly is a striking evergreen, prized for its dense foliage, symmetrical habit, and brilliant red berries in winter. Here’s how to keep it thriving:

  • Watering: Water regularly during the first growing season to establish a deep root system. Once established, Monarch Holly is moderately drought-tolerant but benefits from occasional deep watering during extended dry spells. Always let the soil dry slightly between waterings to prevent root rot.
  • Pruning: Prune lightly in late winter or early spring to maintain shape and encourage dense growth. Remove dead, damaged, or crossing branches. It responds well to selective pruning for hedges, screens, or sculpted forms. Avoid heavy shearing that may compromise its natural layered look.
  • Fertilizing: Feed with a slow-release, balanced fertilizer in early spring to support foliage color and berry production. A light midseason feeding can maintain vigor, but avoid excessive nitrogen, which can reduce berry formation.
  • Mulching: Apply a 2-3 inch layer of organic mulch around the base to conserve moisture, moderate soil temperature, and suppress weeds. Keep mulch a few inches away from the trunk to prevent rot. Refresh annually.
  • Winter Care: Monarch Holly is hardy in most regions and retains rich green leaves throughout winter. In colder climates, a mulch layer around the roots helps protect young plants from frost.

Monarch Holly is resilient, but occasional issues may arise:

  • Leaf Drop: Can occur after transplanting or extreme drought. Consistent moisture and proper mulch help the plant recover.
  • Scale Insects: Small bumps on stems or leaves can cause yellowing. Treat with horticultural oil in winter or insecticidal soap during the growing season.
  • Spider Mites: These pests may cause stippling or faded leaves in hot, dry weather. Spray with water or apply neem oil for control.
  • Sooty Mold: Black residue from sap-feeding insects. Manage by controlling the underlying pests; the mold will naturally disappear.
  • Chlorosis (Yellow Leaves): Often due to alkaline soil or poor drainage. Iron supplements or soil acidifiers can restore green color.

With proper care, it can live 40-50 years or more. Its evergreen structure and disease resistance make it a long-term investment in the landscape.

It grows at a moderate rate, filling in its upright habit within 5-7 years. Once established, it maintains a dense form with minimal pruning.

Yes - female plants produce bright red berries in fall and winter when a male pollinator is nearby. The berries attract birds and provide seasonal color.

Yes - it adapts well to large pots or planters. Use a well-draining soil mix and water more frequently than in-ground plantings during hot periods.

Yes - it thrives in full sun and high temperatures, maintaining vibrant foliage. Occasional deep watering during dry spells supports optimal growth and berry production.

Yes - mature plants withstand frost and freezing temperatures. Mulching young plants during severe winters provides extra protection.

Absolutely - Monarch Holly’s dense branching and upright habit make it perfect for formal hedges, privacy screens, or structured borders. Light pruning encourages new growth while maintaining a polished look.

Cut back one-third of the oldest stems to the base in late winter. This stimulates new growth, improves density, and refreshes the overall appearance.

Yes - it tolerates heat, pollution, and compacted soils, making it an excellent choice for city streets, commercial plantings, and public landscapes.

Feed once in early spring and optionally midseason with a slow-release, balanced fertilizer. This encourages healthy growth, vibrant foliage, and consistent berry production without overstimulating leaf growth.
