Turk's Cap Red

Malvaviscus arboreus var. drummondii

If you're looking to add some ornamental appeal to your landscape, then Turks Cap Red is an ideal choice. Tubular red flowers emerge in summer and create a gorgeous contrast against the lush, deep green foliage. It will be a wonderful specimen plant, adding a striking visual element to your landscape. It's excellent for borders and mass plantings. This perennial reaches up to 2 feet in height and 3 feet in width at maturity.

  • A deciduous perennial
  • Mounded, bushy growth habit
  • Moderate growth rate
  • Vibrant red flowers blooming in summer
  • Great for adding ornamental value

Hardy in zones 7–10, this vibrant perennial will fit right into your North Texas landscape. It thrives in full sun, although it doesn't mind some partial shade either. Plant it in well-drained, slightly acidic to neutral soil and watch it prosper.

Turk's Cap Red is a heat- and drought-tolerant perennial that provides bold, tubular red flowers and lush green foliage with minimal care when established:

  • Watering: Water consistently during the first growing season to establish strong, deep roots. Once established, Turks Cap Red is highly drought-tolerant but benefits from occasional deep watering during extended dry periods. Avoid waterlogged soil, which can cause root decline. Deep, infrequent watering encourages robust growth and prolonged flowering.
  • Pruning: Light pruning in late winter or early spring maintains a tidy shape and encourages dense branching. Remove spent flower stems throughout the blooming season to prolong blooms. Avoid heavy pruning in late fall, as tender new growth may be damaged by frost.
  • Fertilizing: Apply a slow-release, balanced fertilizer in early spring if the soil is poor. Over-fertilization can produce soft, leggy growth at the expense of flower production. In lean, well-draining soils, additional feeding is usually unnecessary.
  • Mulching: Apply a 2-3 inch layer of coarse mulch or gravel around the base to conserve moisture, suppress weeds, and improve airflow. Keep mulch slightly away from the crown to prevent rot and maintain healthy roots.
  • Winter Care: Turk's Cap Red is hardy in USDA zones 8-11. In colder climates or during unusual freezes, a light mulch around the base protects roots. Container-grown plants may require temporary shelter during frost events.
  • Leggy Growth: Excessive shade or over-fertilization can cause open, stretched growth. Light pruning or pinching in early spring promotes fuller branching and a compact habit.
  • Root Rot: Poor drainage or overwatering may damage roots. Plant in well-draining soil and avoid prolonged wet conditions.
  • Fungal Leaf Spots: Brown or black spots can develop in humid or overcrowded conditions. Remove affected leaves and improve air circulation. Avoid overhead watering when possible.
  • Pests: Generally pest-resistant, though occasional aphids or spider mites may appear during hot, dry periods. Rinse foliage or use insecticidal soap if needed.
  • Reduced Flowering: Stress from drought, inconsistent watering, or nutrient imbalance can reduce blooms. Regular deadheading and consistent care encourage a long flowering season.

It grows moderately, typically reaching 3-5 feet tall and 2-4 feet wide within 2-3 years. Its spreading, mounding habit makes it ideal for borders, mass plantings, and naturalistic gardens.

With proper care, it can thrive for 10-15 years or more. Regular pruning, proper watering, and well-drained soil maintain vigor and flowering performance.

Absolutely. Once established, it tolerates dry spells while still producing vibrant blooms during hot periods.

Yes. Turk's Cap Red thrives in lean, well-draining soils, including sandy or rocky conditions. Heavy or overly rich soils may encourage leggy growth.

Light pruning annually and deadheading throughout the season keep the plant tidy and promote continuous flowering.

Yes. Its vibrant red blooms, long flowering period, and lush foliage make it perfect for mass plantings, borders, or naturalistic landscapes.

Provide deep, consistent watering during dry spells, remove spent flowers regularly, and lightly prune in early spring. Avoid over-fertilization, which can reduce bloom density.

Its bold red flowers, long-lasting bloom season, hummingbird appeal, and low-maintenance habit make it a standout choice for sunny gardens. Turk's Cap Red delivers vibrant color, texture, and graceful form with minimal care, ideal for both formal and naturalistic landscapes.
