Trident Maple Aeryn

Acer buergerianum ‘Aeryn’

Trident Maple 'Aeryn' is valued for its elegant shape and captivating fall display. As cooler months approach, its foliage transforms into a vibrant blend of yellow, orange, and red, offering a warm splash of seasonal color to your outdoor space. At maturity, this deciduous tree grows up to 25 feet tall and equally wide, creating a well-balanced, rounded canopy that complements a variety of landscape designs. Whether featured in an open lawn area or alongside other ornamental trees, 'Aeryn' delivers visual appeal throughout the seasons.

  • Deciduous tree
  • Moderate growth rate
  • Broad, rounded canopy
  • Brilliant yellow, orange, and red foliage in fall
  • Great choice for adding seasonal color to your landscape

Hardy in zones 5-8, Trident Maple 'Aeryn' performs best in full sun to partial shade and well-drained soils. With its stunning autumn transformation and attractive natural form, this tree adds character and lasting beauty to any landscape.

Tridens Maple Aeryn is very easy going once established, thriving on minimal maintenance throughout the seasons. Here’s all you should know:

  • Watering: Water deeply during the first few years to help the young tree establish a stable root system. Mature trees handle moderate drought, though consistent moisture during heatwaves ensures the best leaf color and density.
  • Pruning: Prune in late winter or early spring to remove weak or crossing branches and maintain a balanced framework. ‘Aeryn’ naturally develops a well-shaped canopy, so heavy structural pruning is seldom required.
  • Fertilizing: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring to promote healthy foliage and steady growth. In nutrient-poor soils, an annual compost layer helps enrich the root zone and enhance autumn color.
  • Mulching: Maintain a 2-3 inch mulch layer around the base to preserve moisture and support the shallow roots. Keep mulch slightly away from the trunk to prevent moisture-related bark issues.
  • Winter Care: Aeryn is cold-hardy and withstands winter reliably once established. Young trees may benefit from wind protection in exposed sites, but mature specimens hold up well through harsh weather.

Trident Maple Aeryn is resilient, though unfavorable conditions may occasionally bring mild problems:

  • Leaf Scorch: Edges of leaves brown during intense heat or drought. Consistent watering and afternoon shade in hot climates help prevent recurring scorch.
  • Aphids: Curled or sticky leaves indicate aphid feeding. Rinsing or applying insecticidal soap restores healthy growth quickly.
  • Powdery Mildew: A powdery white film appears during humid, shaded conditions. Improve airflow and avoid overhead watering to reduce disease pressure.
  • Chlorosis: Yellow leaf tissue with green veins suggests nutrient imbalances, usually from alkaline soil. Use chelated iron and gradually improve soil pH for long-term correction.
  • Scale Insects: Small bumps on branches or sticky residue indicate scale presence. Treat with horticultural oil and inspect new growth for improvement.

These trees typically live 60-100 years, often growing more beautiful and sculptural with age. Their longevity makes them well-suited for legacy plantings and long-term landscape structure.

It grows at a moderate rate, forming a mature canopy in about 10-20 years. The branching becomes more intricate as the tree ages, enhancing its ornamental appeal.

Aeryn often displays more intense and wider-ranging color transitions, blending amber, coral, orange, and red in dramatic combinations. Its leaves are slightly smaller and more refined, giving the tree a delicate, elegant appearance.

Its moderate size and tidy canopy make it an outstanding choice for compact yards. Even in limited space, it delivers shade, structure, and vivid seasonal color.

The bark develops soft texturing and subtle color variation that becomes more visible in winter. Its branching structure remains attractive even when the foliage is gone.

It performs exceptionally well in city environments, tolerating pollution, compact soil, and reflected heat. This adaptability makes it a reliable choice for streetscapes and commercial landscapes.

Its controlled size and gentle canopy make it ideal for framing outdoor living areas. The dappled shade it provides creates a comfortable, inviting atmosphere.

Ferns, Heucheras, Hydrangeas, Dogwoods, ornamental grasses, and Hostas complement its fine leaves and fall tones. These pairings create layered, harmonious planting designs.

Its flexible branches withstand moderate wind quite well. Young trees benefit from protection while establishing, but mature specimens are sturdy.

Younger trees transplant successfully when moved in late winter or early spring. Once replanted, they typically reestablish quickly with proper watering.
