Sweet Bay Magnolia Moonglow

Magnolia virginiana 'Jim Wilson'

Sweet Bay Magnolia ‘Moonglow’ is a standout selection of the beloved native magnolia, prized for its upright form, vigorous growth, and enhanced cold hardiness. It grows 20 feet in height and 10 feet in width at maturity. In summer, ‘Moonglow’ produces creamy white flowers with a delicate lemony fragrance that attract pollinators and add elegance to any landscape.

  • Evergreen tree
  • Moderate growth rate
  • Fragrant white blooms with a sweet citrus scent
  • Upright, pyramidal shape with year-round interest
  • Perfect for privacy screens, specimen trees, or woodland borders

For a fast-growing, resilient magnolia with both beauty and toughness, Sweet Bay ‘Moonglow’ is a radiant pick. Unlike some magnolias that can be finicky, ‘Moonglow’ adapts beautifully to a range of soils, even thriving in moist or slightly boggy areas, making it an excellent choice for rain beds or naturalized plantings. Hardy in USDA zones 5 through 10.

Sweet Bay Magnolia Moonglow’s clean lines and low-maintenance nature make it a standout choice for Texas landscapes and formal gardens. Here’s how it can thrive:

  • Watering: Water deeply during the first growing season to establish a strong root system. Once mature, ‘Moonglow’ prefers evenly moist, well-drained soil. Supplemental watering during periods of heat, drought, or reflective urban conditions ensures vibrant foliage and abundant flower production. Avoid soggy soil, which can stress roots.
  • Pruning: Pruning needs are minimal. Remove dead, damaged, or crossing branches in late winter or early spring to maintain a tidy, upright form. Light shaping after flowering can refine the canopy, but heavy pruning is not recommended as it may reduce blooms.
  • Fertilizing: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring to support healthy leaf growth and prolific blooms. In nutrient-poor soils, a light summer feeding may help maintain vigor. Avoid high-nitrogen fertilizers, which can promote excessive leafy growth over flowers.
  • Mulching: Apply a 2-3 inch layer of organic mulch around the base to retain soil moisture, suppress weeds, and moderate soil temperature. Keep mulch a few inches from the trunk to prevent rot and allow proper airflow. Refresh annually for best results.
  • Winter Care: ‘Moonglow’ is hardy and evergreen. In colder climates, a light mulch layer can protect roots from freeze-thaw cycles. Avoid late-season fertilization to prevent tender growth susceptible to frost.

Sweet Bay Magnolia Moonglow is quite hardy, but can still encounter some issues. Here are the most common ones:

  • Leaf Spot: Brown or black spots can appear during wet, humid conditions. Remove affected leaves and ensure adequate spacing for airflow.
  • Scale Insects: Small bumps along stems and leaves can cause yellowing or decline. Treat with horticultural oil during the growing season.
  • Aphids: Clusters on new growth may produce sticky residue. Rinse with water or apply insecticidal soap for management.
  • Chlorosis: Yellowing leaves with green veins often indicate iron deficiency. Apply chelated iron and correct soil pH if needed.
  • Bud Drop: Temperature swings or inconsistent watering can cause premature flower drop. Maintain steady moisture and avoid pruning during stress periods.

With proper care, it can live 50 years or more, providing long-term structure and beauty in landscapes.

It grows moderately, adding about 12-18 inches per year. It typically reaches full size and mature canopy in 8-10 years.

Yes, young trees can thrive temporarily in large, deep containers, but long-term growth is best in the ground. Adequate watering and nutrient management are crucial in container settings.

Moderately, deer may occasionally sample tender new growth, but mature foliage is usually left alone.

It performs very well with consistent moisture and mulch around the roots. Afternoon shade in reflective or very hot areas helps maintain leaf quality.

Yes, transplant when dormant in late fall or early spring. Keep roots moist and provide consistent post-transplant watering.

While often planted as a specimen, multiple ‘Moonglow’ magnolias can form a formal row or layered grouping. Adequate spacing ensures healthy canopy development.

Companions include Azaleas, Camellias, Ferns, Gardenias, and Hydrangeas, which thrive in similar conditions and complement its evergreen foliage and fragrant blooms.

Yes, its upright, narrow form and fragrant blooms make it ideal for courtyards, patios, and tight spaces where structure and scent are desired.

Its fragrant, creamy-white blooms appear early and consistently, paired with glossy evergreen foliage and a naturally elegant, upright habit. ‘Moonglow’ combines year-round visual appeal with low-maintenance sophistication, perfect for formal or small-space landscapes.
