Shamrock White Lantana

Lantana camara 'Balshamite'

Shamrock White Lantana is a tough perennial suitable for various types of landscape use. It's perfect for containers and hanging baskets, due to its compact, mounded growth habit. Its clusters of small white flowers with yellow centres bloom from spring to fall and look wonderful against the tomentose, green leaves. This perennial grows up to 1 foot tall and the same size across at maturity. It reaches maturity within a single growing season.

  • A herbaceous perennial
  • Compact, mounded growth habit
  • Fast growth rate
  • Great for containers and hanging baskets
  • White flowers blooming from spring to fall

Shamrock White Lantana is hardy in zones 8-11, and it will fare well in the North Texas climate. It thrives in full sun, requiring at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily. Plant it in well-drained, slightly acidic soil and watch it prosper and enrich your landscape.

Maintenance

Once established, Shamrock White Lantana performs beautifully with minimal care - thriving even in tough conditions that challenge other plants. Here’s what it needs:

  • Watering: Water regularly during the first growing season to establish deep roots. Once mature, it’s highly drought-tolerant and only needs occasional deep watering during prolonged dry spells.
  • Pruning: Lightly trim throughout the growing season to remove faded flowers and encourage new blooms. In late winter or early spring, cut back by about one-third to refresh the plant’s shape and promote strong spring growth. Avoid heavy pruning late in fall to protect new shoots from cold damage.
  • Fertilizing: Feed lightly in early spring with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer to encourage vigorous flowering. Avoid over-fertilizing, as excessive nutrients can reduce bloom production.
  • Mulching: Apply a 2-3 inch layer of mulch around the base to retain soil moisture and suppress weeds. Keep mulch a few inches from the stems to prevent rot, and refresh annually for best results.
  • Winter care: In mild Texas climates, Shamrock White Lantana often remains evergreen. In colder regions, it may die back to the ground and return in spring. Mulch around the base before frost to insulate the roots during freezing temperatures.

Common Issues and How to Take Care of Them

Shamrock White Lantana is highly resilient and pest-resistant, but a few minor issues can occasionally arise:

  • Powdery Mildew: Caused by high humidity and poor air circulation. To address this issue, improve spacing and airflow and apply a fungicide if necessary.
  • Aphids: Small insects that gather on new shoots. Remove them with a strong spray of water or treat with insecticidal soap.
  • Whiteflies: These tiny pests may appear in hot, dry conditions. Use sticky traps or horticultural oil to control them.
  • Spider Mites: Cause stippling on leaves during extreme heat. Mist foliage occasionally or apply neem oil to manage them.
  • Root Rot: Overwatering or poor drainage can cause root decay. Always plant in well-drained soil and avoid soggy conditions.
  • Leggy Growth: If the plant becomes stretched or sparse, shear lightly midseason to rejuvenate compact growth.

With light maintenance and well-drained conditions, Shamrock White Lantana delivers continuous blooms and lush color from spring through fall.
