Ruffled Red Magic Crape Myrtle

Lagerstroemia 'PIILAG-VII'

Ruffled Red Magic Crape Myrtle stands out with its richly textured, ruffled deep red blooms that cover the plant all throughout the summer. Its glossy green leaves provide a beautiful backdrop, creating a striking contrast with the flowers. Growing 9 feet in height and 7 feet in width, this tree has an upright and rounded form, making it versatile for use as a border, hedge, or focal point. It also attracts pollinators, adding life to your bed.

  • Deciduous tree
  • Moderate growth rate with upright, rounded growth habit
  • Ruffled deep red flower clusters all summer long
  • Glossy green foliage
  • Attracts pollinators

Ruffled Red Magic Crape Myrtle thrives best in full sun and well-drained soil. It is heat- and drought-tolerant once established and hardy in USDA zones 7 through 9. Annual trimming encourages healthy growth and a prolific bloom display, making it a stunning addition to Texas landscapes.

Once established, Ruffled Red Magic Crape Myrtle becomes reliably low-maintenance and develops into a sturdy ornamental tree requiring only light seasonal care. This is how it grows beautifully:

  • Watering: Water deeply during the first growing season to establish a strong and resilient root system. After establishment, occasional deep watering during extended dry periods helps maintain healthy foliage and steady flowering.
  • Pruning: Late-winter pruning helps remove crowded or damaged branches while maintaining a balanced canopy structure. Light structural pruning encourages stronger limbs and helps support the weight of large bloom clusters.
  • Fertilizing: Fertilizer is rarely necessary in average soils. If growth appears weak or foliage lacks vigor, a balanced fertilizer applied in early spring can encourage steady development.
  • Mulching: Maintain a 2-3 inch mulch layer around the root zone to retain moisture and moderate soil temperature. Keep mulch slightly away from the trunk to prevent excess moisture from collecting against the bark.
  • Winter Care: Established trees typically tolerate seasonal cold within their recommended zones. Younger plants may benefit from additional mulch during their first winters to help stabilize root temperatures.

Ruffled Red Magic Crape Myrtle generally grows with few issues, though occasional pests or structural stress may appear.

  • Leaf Gall Formation: Small swollen bumps may occasionally appear on leaves due to insect activity. Removing affected foliage helps reduce future occurrences.
  • Ant Activity: Ants may gather along branches when feeding on honeydew from sap-feeding insects. Managing the underlying insect population typically resolves the issue.
  • Twig Dieback: Individual twigs may occasionally fail to leaf out if damaged or weakened. Pruning affected sections during dormancy helps maintain healthy structure.
  • Minor Root Exposure: Soil erosion or heavy watering may expose surface roots over time. Adding mulch around the base helps protect and stabilize the root zone.
  • Bud Cluster Overcrowding: Very dense flower clusters may occasionally weigh down branch tips. Light structural pruning helps distribute future blooms more evenly.

Ruffled Red Magic Crape Myrtle commonly lives 30-50 years under favorable conditions. Mature trees maintain strong structure for many decades. Routine pruning helps support long-term health.

Growth generally averages about 12-18 inches per year. Structural maturity often develops within 6-9 years. A full canopy typically forms within about 10-12 years.

This cultivar is recognized for its vivid red flowers with deeply ruffled petals. The bloom texture gives the flower clusters a fuller, more layered appearance. Dense blooms create a bold display during peak flowering.

The blooms appear in dense panicles that form at the ends of branches. Multiple clusters often develop across the canopy at the same time. This creates a broad display of color.

The tree typically forms a rounded canopy with evenly spaced limbs. As it matures, branches become more gracefully arranged. Light pruning helps maintain this natural balance.

Flower clusters provide nectar for bees and other beneficial insects. Summer blooms help sustain pollinator activity when many spring plants have finished flowering. This contributes to garden biodiversity.

Small seed capsules may develop once flowering finishes. These pods remain on the branches and add subtle texture. Many gardeners remove them during seasonal pruning.

With maturity, the bark begins to peel in thin layers. Lighter tones beneath the surface become visible over time. This exfoliating bark adds character to the trunk.

The canopy typically becomes moderately dense with evenly distributed leaves. Branch spacing allows filtered light to pass through the foliage. This creates a balanced and airy structure.

Branches gradually thicken and support the weight of heavy bloom clusters. Early structural pruning helps establish proper spacing. Mature trees usually maintain sturdy limbs.
