Milly Rock Yellow Yarrow

Achillea millefolium 'FLORACHYE0'

Milly Rock Yellow Yarrow is a versatile perennial known for its stunning yellow and orange flowers and its aromatic foliage. The flowers bloom from spring to summer, adding a pop of color to any landscape. It's an excellent option for borders, containers, and mass plantings. Due to its compact, mounding habit, it could be used as a groundcover as well. Reaches up to 1 foot tall and the same size wide at maturity.

  • A herbaceous perennial
  • Compact, mounding growth habit
  • Fast growth rate
  • Yellow and orange flowers
  • Aromatic foliage

Hardy in zones 3-9, this perennial will fare well in the North Texas climate. It thrives in full sun, so ensure at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight daily. Milly Rock Yellow Yarrow is tolerant of various soil types, as long as they are well-drained. With a bit of care, this resilient perennial will enrich your landscape and provide visual interest.

Once established, Milly Rock Yellow Yarrow thrives with minimal input while delivering long-lasting color and strong garden structure:

  • Watering: Water consistently during the first growing season to help roots establish deeply and evenly. Once established, this yarrow is highly drought-tolerant and performs best with deep, infrequent watering rather than consistently moist soil.
  • Pruning: Remove spent flower heads to encourage continued blooming and maintain a neat appearance. After a heavy flush of flowers, cutting the plant back lightly refreshes foliage and promotes a second round of blooms.
  • Fertilizing: This plant prefers lean soil and requires little to no fertilizer once established. If growth appears weak, a light application of balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring is sufficient.
  • Mulching: Apply a light layer of mulch to conserve moisture and reduce weed competition during establishment. Keep mulch pulled away from the crown to prevent excess moisture buildup.
  • Winter Care: Cold-hardy and dependable, this yarrow requires no winter protection once established. Leave dried stems in place through winter for insulation, then cut back to the ground in early spring.

Milly Rock Yellow Yarrow is exceptionally tough, though a few issues may arise if growing conditions become overly rich, wet, or crowded:

  • Crown Rot: Plants may weaken or collapse when moisture accumulates around the crown for extended periods. Improve drainage and avoid overwatering to prevent recurrence.
  • Excessive Foliage with Few Flowers: Plants may produce lush leaves but fewer blooms in overly fertile soils. Reduce fertilization and allow soil conditions to lean out to restore flowering.
  • Rust: Orange or rusty-colored spots may appear on leaves during cool, damp weather. Remove affected foliage promptly and improve airflow around plants.
  • Aphids: Small insects may cluster on tender stems, causing distortion and sticky residue. Rinse plants with water or use insecticidal soap if infestations persist.
  • Stem Flopping: Flower stems may lean outward if plants grow too lush or become crowded. Light pruning and occasional division help restore upright form.

This perennial typically lives 5-7 years under good growing conditions. Regular division helps rejuvenate older plants and extend their productive lifespan.

Plants establish quickly, adding roughly 8-12 inches of growth in their first season. Full clump size and peak flowering are usually reached by the second growing year.

The flat-topped flower clusters are highly attractive to bees, butterflies, and beneficial insects. Blooming over an extended period makes it a reliable food source in pollinator gardens.

The aromatic, finely textured foliage is generally unappealing to deer. Browsing is uncommon and rarely causes lasting damage.

It can perform well in containers with excellent drainage and restrained watering. Container growth also helps control moisture and maintain compact form.

Division every 2-3 years helps maintain compact growth and vigorous flowering. Early spring or fall division allows plants to reestablish quickly.

Mass plantings create bold, cohesive drifts of color with minimal maintenance. Its uniform habit ensures consistent coverage across large areas.

It pairs especially well with ornamental grasses, lavender, salvia, and other drought-tolerant perennials. Softer foliage textures enhance its upright flower form.

It spreads slowly by clumping rather than running. Occasional division keeps growth controlled and well-contained.

Its compact size, vivid yellow blooms, and exceptional drought tolerance set it apart. The plant delivers strong visual impact while thriving in lean, challenging conditions.
